I'm a man. I became a man May 27, 1998. I didn't slay a bear. I didn't go to war. I didn't have my heart broken. I still ride a moped, read comic books and have sleepovers. I'm a man.
So when I say, "I met this woman. She's fantastic," I mean I met a charming female human at least 18 years old.
I can't stand when women refer to themselves as girls. I can't stand when men refer to themselves as boys. And I really think the damage done goes beyond my sensibilities.
In other cultures, people take their adulthood seriously. Terms roughly equivalent to mister and misses still are used and demanded. And, perhaps as a result, people tend to live up to the obligations of the title.
Notice women generally use the term "girls" when they're referring to a childish activity: "My girls and I are gonna get shitfaced tonight! Woo!" And men use the term boys in the same manner: "Me and the boys are gonna get a case of the Beast and watch the Browns!"
I'm of the opinion that calling ourselves "girls" and "boys" tempts us to step away from acting like adults and age isn't just a number. So, ladies and gentlemen, stay conscious of the terms you use, and you just might start thinking and acting differently.
