I had the misfortune to be working on shift through last night, meaning that not only could I see the results of the EU referendum coming in live, but I had to put up with the glee of three of my co-workers (all of whom had voted to "Leave") as the tide swung towards the "Leave" result. I watched as the pound fell sharply, buoyed back up as remain took the lead, then fell again as leave started to win. I watched as pretty much my entire twitter feed was a chorus of disappointment and disenfranchisement from the Brits (I don't know a single person, other than my colleagues, who voted leave), and abject confusion from friends across the world as to how the UK could be doing something as stupid as voting for Trump, after all the ribbing the UK has been giving the US.
I got home after what feels like the longest 12 hours in a long time, to see interviews of people saying that they didn't think leave would win and their vote wouldn't matter, so they voted leave instead of remain. I saw the leaders (well, that utter cockwomble Farage) of the leave campaign backtrack within hours of the result, telling the country that those things they were promised won't actually be happening (yes, pretty much "Haha, we lied, and you believed us"). I saw friends here in the UK, EU citizens, worried that they're going to lose their right to live and work in a country they loved, and UK friends living in the EU fearful that they won't be able to stay.
I am angry. So very angry that this country has fallen for the utterly hateful and deceptive campaign orchestrated by the leave side. I can't put into words right now how fearful I am for the future of both the UK and the EU, or incensed I am at the stupidity of a large percentage of our voting population & the deceptive nature of our politicians. It would just be a post full of swearing were I to voice my inner dialogue.
I can only hope that Boris Johnson, a man who was *INCREDIBLY* pro-Europe until only months ago, is more of a cunning weasel than people give him credit for, and has merely used the gullibility of the leave voters to wedge his foot firmly in the door for the chance to be the leader of the Conservatives, and then once elected (by 150,000 members of the Conservative party, not the entire UK population, mind you ¬.¬ ) to take the stance of "Actually, Brexit is a bad idea, you can see how the markets were affected!" and keep us in Europe now that those who voted leave can see just how much they were misled and lied to by the campaign.
TL:DR #NotAllBrits want to leave the EU. I certainly don't. Please don't write us all off yet.
