I suppose I didn’t start out the argument well either. One doesn’t usually try to reply to a statement by saying, Well you would like that kind of argument wouldn’t you? Doesn’t exactly produce the neutral and objective arena for effective discussion ( Read more... )

The thing is everyone is free to make any choice, regardless of religion. (Or, sometimes unfortunately, any judgment.) Normative thinking is a choice too, whether conscious or unconscious.
It is kinda funny/sad that the whole idea/benefit of the covering is, from what I've gathered, to be judged more on personality than appearance - I suppose in cultures/environments where they're the norm they do have that effect, but of course here they just result in different judgments.
And by 'of course' I mean that whether or not we externalize our judgments, everyone makes them all the time. The trick is deconstructing them - figuring out where they're coming from, why, and ultimately recognizing that everyone presents differently and that you will never ever know everything you need to know about a person without actually talking to them.
Individual dialogue can make important differences, but social activism attracts attention and opens up these dialogues. Both are important - to discount one or the other is to cut off your nose to spite your face, so to speak.
Sorry stuff is frustrating with your mom. You know you can call if you ever want to talk. =)
