Character: Kyuubey
Fandom: Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Personality:
One accurate word to describe Kyuubey would be ambiguous, as his role in the series tends to fluctuate between hero sidekick and antagonist.
At first sight, he’s the perfect mascot of your usual mahou shoujo series: cute to a fault and completely innocent. He acts as a guide to the main characters, introducing them to the world of magical girls, as well as the benefits and hazards that come with fighting witches. He also often speaks in a rather upbeat tone, sometimes carrying himself like a pet would - pawing at his own face, cuddling up to the girls or standing on their shoulders, letting them pick him up in their arms and even feed him, all the while offering his ever present, immutable smile. Perfectly adorable, right?
Well, not quite.
Kyuubey is a master manipulator, as later observed in the story. Most notably, he will deliberately omit vital information about the consequences of contracting with him, such as the fact that magical girls will have their souls extracted and turned into Soul Gems, while their bodies become nothing more than an empty husk - a big robot, to quote Kyuubey himself. At another point, he claims he did not stop one of the magical girls from fruitlessly trying to rescue another because it wasn’t a pointless sacrifice, but rather, something that had greater meaning, that is to say, their deaths would result in Homura Akemi as only one left to face the strongest witch of all during Walpurgis Night, and thus the one candidate he had been pursuing all along would finally cave and go into a contract with him in order to prevent that: Madoka Kaname.
As a matter of fact, that side of Kyuubey is more commonly seen around Madoka. Seeing as her potential was quite exceptional (for reasons unknown, until much later in the series), she soon became the main target of his attempts to contract. More often than not, he will be found nearby and remind her of the possibility of becoming a magical girl whenever the opportune situation presents itself, usually at the most critical times. He is not contrary to resorting to more cunning schemes, either, such as claiming only a magical girl has the right to criticize and judge another, or even taking advantage of a moment of despair to try and offer his contract, a miracle to solve all issues. Basically, if there is a way to gain an advantage and as long as it doesn’t break the rules he abides to, he will do it, and it doesn’t really matter if he will be seen as a bad guy or not.
On that same line of thought, it’s worth noting that Kyuubey does not perceive himself as evil. The Incubator race is completely devoid of emotions, save for the extremely rare instance where one of them would be able to feel - in which case that would be seen as a mental disorder. On a regular basis, though, the Incubators are rational creatures, to the point of applying cold logic even to the worst of predicaments - by human standards, at least. For instance, when asked about his delay in revealing the whole truth about the circumstances surrounding magical girls and their Soul Gems, Kyuubey states that it was more convenient that way, as so was having their bodies separated from their spirits as that meant they could endure physical damage much more easily and later on heal themselves with magic. At a different point, he implies it doesn’t make sense for people to make such a big deal out of the loss of a single human when their population consists of hundreds of billions and keeps growing at an impressive ratio. He even goes as far as telling Madoka he would be waiting for her if she wanted to die for the sake of universe, without any regard whatsoever for her feelings.
At times like that, it’s plain to see why the girls would think he’s cruel. Kyuubey, however, remains cool and composed throughout the whole ordeal, claiming he does not understand humans - which is, in fact, true. As creatures driven by reason, efficiency and convenience, Incubators cannot relate to human morals and values. They see nothing wrong with sacrificing a life or two if it’s for a greater cause, and they will waste no energy resources - and that includes devouring a fallen Incubator as a means of recycling. You can’t say they are no friends of the environment!
In the end, Kyuubey is moved by his one single feeling: his sense of duty. His mission on Earth is to collect a surplus of energy so to counter entropy and the eventual extinction of the Universe, and he will do whatever it takes to accomplish that. The rules only say he cannot force a contract on anyone without their consent or suggest a wish so to speed up the process; everything else is perfectly acceptable.

Abilities:
Kyuubey’s most prominent ability is to grant any wish, in exchange for a contract to turn the other party into a magical girl. As such, he will endow girls with all kinds of powers, ranging from creating weapons to manipulating time itself. For in-game purposes, though, he won’t be able to send anyone else home.
Kyuubey can also directly communicate via telepathy and pass on messages within a group of people, sort of like a psychic network. Furthermore, he can choose to be seen only by a select few humans, which allows him to infiltrate places at whim and follow any magical girl candidates to school and such.
Finally, Incubators have developed the technological means to turn human emotions into energy, although that is likely only available in their home planet.

Out of all species Kyuubey had met across the galaxies, humans were, by far, the strangest.
He couldn’t exactly call that reaction surprising, no; all magical girls had a tendency to grow upset at the revelation that their once human bodies were now merely an empty shell improved for battle, with their spirits materialized in the form of Soul Gems. Sometimes, one or two of them would get violent and try to lash out at him - a fruitless attempt, he would then point out, as Incubators could easily make use of substitutes, although it was a shame to waste so much genetic material over irrational whims. Still, that was the way of mankind; whenever something went wrong for them, they usually blamed the other party without a second thought.
He still remembered the first time it happened, so many centuries ago. Back then, he might have given humans the benefit of the doubt and expected something different; it only made sense that those girls should be grateful to the Incubators, not only for granting them a miracle and the gift of magic, but also for making sure their mission would be a little easier - having a higher threshold for pain and great endurance against physical damage should be something of a godsend, especially when they could just heal themselves with magic later on. To him, it sounded like the perfect system; to magical girls, not so much.
That was why Kyuubey couldn’t bring himself to find it odd when Madoka Kaname fell to her knees over Sayaka Miki’s inert body and burst into tears, or even as Kyoko Sakura grabbed him by the ears and demanded further elaboration - only to boil up in anger as he told her it had been much more convenient to withhold information up until that point. They were emotional creatures who cared far too much about the reservoir of their souls, even as he had proved once and again that the current status quo was a much more beneficial alternative. And that was also why, when accused of doing such a cruel thing, his response could only be one.
“I don’t get it!”
Sample journal entry:
[The first thing viewers will be treated to are a pair of red eyes, staring very intently at the screen. Next, they can also spot what seems to be a mouth, shaped like the number three rotated clockwise - believe it or not, that is a smile, and it’s not going anywhere.
As the camera keeps zooming out, the rest of the strange creature will come into shape: a small, mostly white body with the occasional red marking here and there, a long tail and two pairs of ears. At first sight, it almost looks like an alien cat. It might even act like one, what with the way it’s tilting its head to a side and pawing at his face. It’s actually quite cute…
Until a voice is heard.]
Hello! [Yes, this is the odd kitty talking. Without moving that mouth.] I seem not to be on Earth anymore, and I don’t think this is a planet I might have visited before, either. [Another head tilt, followed by an ear twitch.] I would appreciate any information on how to leave this place, as my usual methods are ineffective at the moment. In exchange for that-

Perhaps I can offer you a miracle!
