David Mindich, I owe you one

I owe professor Mindich. His selected readings and movies, while corny at times, have always proved useful in my life. They were just backround information, but information that comes back time and again in my daily life. For instance, tonight I saw Goodnight and Goodluck, the movie about Edward R. Murrow taking down Senator McCarthy. Now, it was a good movie, hands down, but it helps if you know the historical context, or even better, saw the original broadcasts. Seeing as how I was -28 years old when Murrow was going all out, I obviusly did not see the live broadcasts. But Mindich made us watch them in a class. And it was great. I love Edward R. Murrow's work because of it, and I got endless amounts of enjoyment from watching this movie.

Mindich was also the one who got me interseted in reading Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, a really good read (if you can accept the super left slant in parts). But he also made me watch Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. His clips from election debates were always the ones that get brought up so I actually know what people are talking about. And getting dragged to New Hampshire for the primaries senior year was one of the coolest things I've ever done.

So really, David Mindich and the other JO professors (especially Kevin Kelly and Jon Hyde) taught me a lot of things I need to know to be a well educated person.

That was my praise for SMC journalism. That is all.

Goodnight and goodluck.
