Our President...

"In a speech before U.S. troops who stand watch along the Korean frontier, President Bush on Saturday offered his latest rebuttal to Democratic calls to bring U.S. troops home from Iraq, vowing to 'stay in the fight until we have achieved the victory our brave troops have fought for.'" -from Cnn.com.

A) Aside from Democrats, Republican leaders, most notably a Viet Vet from PA, are calling for our troops to come home now.

B) There is no historical evidence to suggest that a "victory" in Iraq is even remotely possible. Not to say that our soldiers aren't trying hard, but no Western civilization has achieved a victory and managed to hold it peacebly in the Middle East since the Byzantine Empire, and even they were constantly at war on their fronteirs in the area. The crusaders carved out empires for themselves, but they didn't last long and were never at peace. The state of Israel hasn't faired much better, being a state constantly at war with terrorists within its own borders and with agressor states outside them.

C) What was the reason we went into Iraq in the first place? Oh right, weapons of mass desturction and then to free the Iraqi people. Well, there were no WMDs and seeing as how we stomped the Iraqi army to the ground and deposed Saddam Hussein, I'm pretty sure that counts as liberating the Iraqi people. So, why are we still there? The damned Iraqi's can take care of their god damned selves now.

D) What really bothers me about this is that Bush really means to say that "we will stay in the fight until I get the glory that I've worked so hard to give myself." He's risking the lives of our soliders for no good reason. We met the criteria for victory, we've helped rebuild, its time to get our boys home. But no, Bush's approval ratings are too low, so we need to keep them there until the insurgents go away. Well Mr. President, I hate to break it to you, but the insurgents won't go away. Every one you kill creates two more. Everytime an American kills a Muslim, you create a bigger rift between our two cultures. The cycle won't end, it hasn't ended in a thousand years since the first crusade, and better men than you have tried to make things work there in the past. Just leave already, let the U.N. handle the rest of the reconstruction, its not like they actually do anything important like stopping genocide anymore. Just bring our troops home.
