Summary: Kyuhyun can't sleep at night. What's keeping him up and why?
Donghae was pacing in his room. What the hell happened to Kyuhyun? Was he sick? Or really exhausted? Donghae remembered reading an article about how people would overwork themselves and try to act normal until their body can’t take it anymore and shutdown on them. Did that happen to Kyuhyun just now? Donghae shook his head. No, of course not. Kyuhyun was usually the first to go to sleep. Most of the time. There were those exceptions when Kyuhyun decided to play Starcraft late at night, going to sleep at 5. He knew everyone in the dorm frowned upon it but he’s the maknae. Plus, if any of the hyungs did do something about it, it was inevitable that Kyuhyun would make their lives miserable in ways unimaginable. A knock at the door jarred Donghae out of his thoughts as he stared at the door.
“Come in.” It was Hyukjae at the door. Donghae resumed pacing while Hyukjae walked over to sit on his bed. He was watching Donghae pace a little bit before he spoke up.
“Donghae-ah, do you know what happened to Kyuhyunnie?” He asked with a slight tremor in his voice.
“No,” Donghae said with a sigh. He wished he did though. He stopped pacing again to lean his head on the wall. His mind automatically traveled back two hours when he was in the living room with the maknae. He thought that the male hit his head on the doorframe again but when he saw the maknae fall to the ground, he panicked. Nothing like this ever happened to any of the other members. After Kyuhyun fell, he called for Sungmin-hyung who came and immediately called Leeteuk while Donghae picked up Kyuhyun and took him to the room the maknae shared with Sungmin to lay him down on his bed. He remembered feeling Kyuhyun’s forehead and being shocked at how hot it was and he knew that he had a fever. He told Ryeowook, who still had some soap on his neck from rushing out of the shower, to go get a wet towel to press on the maknae’s forehead. Soon Leeteuk came with the other members that had finished their schedules and they were now in the living room with Sungmin, who was telling them everything that involved the maknae. Donghae sighed. He was worried about the maknae. When he first came to Super Junior, Donghae was one of the first people the Kyuhyun befriended. He always thought that he and the maknae had a special friendship. He turned to look at Hyukjae, only to find that he had left the room while Donghae was busy in his musings. Donghae decided to check on the maknae in his room, to see if he woke up. When Donghae walked into Kyuhyun and Sungmin’s room, he was surprised to see the male tossing and turning, mutter unintelligible words. As Donghae walked closer, he realized that the male’s forehead was beading with sweat and that he had tears streaming down his face. Donghae shook Kyuhyun’s shoulders, trying to wake him up. Kyuhyun started whimpering and shaking, the muttering increased. Donghae shook harder but he couldn’t wake him up from the nightmare he was obviously having. Donghae saw the water bottle on Sungmin’s nightstand and snatched it. He unscrewed the cap and poured the entire thing on Kyuhyun’s head. Kyuhyun’s eyes immediately opened and he reached out to grasp Donghae’s upper arms tightly, like a vise. Donghae tensed, startled at the male’s action.
“Make it stop. Make it stop please,” Kyuhyun pleaded, his lip trembling. Donghae didn’t know what to do, but he knew Kyuhyun wasn’t fully awake by looking at the male’s glassy eyes. If he were, he would’ve said something about him being wet. Donghae tried to move his arms but Kyuhyun wouldn’t let him. More tears fell and Donghae felt his heart breaking because he felt helpless.
“Please, please, please. Tell him to stop, please,” Kyuhyun kept saying. He started to grow hysterical, him being the one shaking the other when only moments ago, the roles were switched. Donghae finally yanked his arm from Kyuhyun’s grasp and swung his arm to slap Kyuhyun on the cheek. Kyuhyun’s head snapped to the side from the impact and Donghae was wondering if he went too far. Kyuhyun looked at him with his eyes cleared and stared. After a few seconds that felt like hours, Kyuhyun grabbed Donghae and pulled him into a suffocating hug. The maknae started to sob into his hyung’s shirt and Donghae wrapped his arms around Kyuhyun and started to rub his back in soothing circles. Kyuhyun tried to say something but Donghae shushed him and told him to get his emotions out. Donghae started thinking about how long Kyuhyun probably had kept his nightmares a secret from the members. He knew that Kyuhyun didn’t like to trouble his hyungs with his problems. Kyuhyun finally stopped sobbing and pulled himself away from his hyung to give him and himself some space. He sniffled a couple of times before looking at Donghae in the eyes. Kyuhyun must’ve saw the question in Donghae’s eyes because he sighed, preparing himself to tell him.
“I-I’ve been having nightmares recently, hyung. I don’t know why and I can’t sleep because of them,” Kyuhyun said in a rush, thinking that if he stopped then he would regret telling Donghae. He then told Donghae every single gruesome detail about his dreams. Donghae was horrified at what his dongsaeng was going through in the past week. He took the maknae into another hug and held him there.
“Hyung….....I’m scared.” Donghae blinked. Did Kyuhyun just say he was scared? Cho Kyuhyun? Their strong maknae that went to hell and back in a matter of 2 years when he debuted? He just reassured his dongsaeng and stared at the wall behind Kyuhyun. Donghae wished that these were just dreams and that the problem would just blow over, but no. Soon, Donghae would find out that he would be wrong. So wrong.
