It was foggy and warm, but London never felt so foreign. Victoria took a swing of her beer, eyeing Uriel at the corner of her eyes, trailing the men and women who walked in a hurry.
News about a greater demon roaming around has sparked some talk within the shadowhunters, but Changmin paid no heed. Demons don’t scare him, not more than humans. Downworlders, he reminded himself.
She wasn’t in a hurry herself, her mind elsewhere. She wonders if he misses her, if he thinks about her, if he misses kissing her. Don’t think about it, she chided herself. He was the one who chose to leave, to leave all these behind. The institute refuses to say anything about his disappearance, and after crying herself to sleep for two weeks, she thinks that was enough.
All he wanted for was a normal life, where he could be the mechanic he wants to be, fall in love and have a family. By the mere age of 12, he knew that the dream he always had since young, will never happen. That one night changed everything. His parents had their life taken in front of him, sucked out to the last drop of blood. They had snared their fangs at him, not before a couple came running across, blades out and divided one of them into two, chasing the other one down the lane. Changmin stared horrified, stuck between agony and shock, before a cry escaped his lips. A hand came up to him and pats his shoulder, and he looked up, a face staring back at him.
She looked like a character out of one of the story books his mother has read of him. An angel, he mused back then. She didn’t seem terrified, her eyes black and blank. He sobbed harder after that, and that angel just hugged him tighter.
I am Victoria; she introduced herself, after being brought back by her guardians. Victoria had told him that she lost her parents when she was 8, by blood-sucking humans. Downworlder, her guardian interrupted. She nodded, and mumbled yes.
Life in the institute wasn’t tough, not to him. Revenge never left his mind, and training made sure he was closer to his goal. In the midst of it, Victoria played a big part of his life, and as they wander closer to unchartered territories, Changmin was sure he might be living his dream again, minus the mechanic part.
Three months ago, an unmarked letter came to him. The contents scared him. He had to leave, he told himself. It was to protect everyone, especially her. One week later, he was gone, with no one knowing where he was, except Heechul, the Head of the institute.
The only words Heechul would tell her was, “He will be back, once he is done.” Victoria doesn’t understand, but, she never does. These people mess with her head all the time, and she thought asking everyone the same question might do her no good. A man in a long coat caught her attention, and her eyes widen. He was moving fast, too fast into the crowd. Changmin! She silently whispered, and grabbing Uriel, she raced across the road, not sorry for bumping into strangers.
He never truly left, just into hiding. That vampire from 6 years ago was back, with a vengeance, and threatened to kill his mate, like how you murdered mine. The Accords has since been signed, but there were some who didn’t play by the rules. He needs to be gone before I can go back. Taking his drink, Changmin lifted his eyes, only to find that the girl whom he has been keeping watch for the last 3 weeks has disappeared from her table. Victoria! His mind yelled, as he stood up, eyes scanning the crowded streets. The small glow of the Seraph blade caught his eye, before being engulfed into the sea of people.
Her eyes search the crowd, finding that familiar back she had missed caressing in that few weeks. His hugs were safe haven, away from this world. Her eyes flicked to the side, and there he was, strolling into the back alley. She knew it lead to a dead end. Her need to catch him turned into hurt, then anger. Marching across, anger overdrove her mind. How dare he leave her like that!
“Shim Changmin!” Victoria’s voice rang through the alley, bouncing off the walls. It was near the dead end, and she knew he couldn’t run anymore. The figure stopped and turned, meeting her eyes with a sorrowful glint.
She wanted to melt in those eyes, into his arms. His presence toned down her anger by a few notches, as she smiled slightly and took a step closer. A small voice in her screamed for her to stop, and she did, when he started walking towards her, eyes flashing dangerously. The air smelled faintly of tar and her mind went on overdrive. Eidolon Demon! It screamed, and her arms went straight to the blade on her back, only to have the air knocked out of her, blade flying to the corner of the street. She scrambled for a dash into the streets, but a hand made a grab for her legs, flinging her onto the wall. Her back let out a small sound with the strength, and as she got up to steady herself, that thing was less than a feet from her, 4 eyes staring holes into her body.
The air in London has been smoggy for a while now, no doubt, but the smell of tar got stronger by the second, and the alarm bells in his head were ringing. The Seraph blade on the ground caught his sight again, and this time, the bells rang louder than the streets. Victoria! The bells screamed, and he made a mad dash across the road.
She pondered a moment if her death would make Changmin come back to the institute, and would her death be ugly. The demon was dangerously close, and with her whole body bloodied and bruised, Victoria knew it was the end. Dying at 19, she mused. How sad. As the demon whipped its hand out for the final blow, she closed her eyes, her mind too drained to fight. Maybe dying would be better; it makes his disappearance more tolerable.
“Isfrael!” Changmin screamed, as he sliced the blade across the demon, effectively cutting it into two, before it disappeared. His eyes were met with the battered form of his angel. “Victoria…” He whispered. She opened her eyes at his voice, giving him a small smile before passing out, back slumped against the wall. Victoria could hear the sound of rushed footsteps and the hurried voice of the man she longed to hear. I must be on my way to heaven, she thought, falling back into total darkness.
The bright light woke her, blinking several times to get use to the brightness. She stood up, taking in the surroundings. It looked like the hospital wing in the institute, and she scrunched her nose in distaste. The walls in Heaven look horrible.
The weight beside her shifted, a face appeared in front of her vision for a brief moment and within a split seconds, hot lips crashed on hers, leaving her momentarily shocked. It was a familiar feeling, and she sighed, both in happiness and ecstasy, as wetness touched her cheeks.
His heart did a somersault when she woke and a feeling of happiness and relief flooded him. The tears were now streaming steadily off his eyes, as thoughts of losing her left his mind. “I am so sorry, please don’t leave me. I am so sorry.” He mumbled, again and again, almost like a mantra, lips never leaving her mouth, eyes never leaving her face. “I thought I will never see you again. Please don’t do this to me. I will never leave you ever.”
Victoria nods numbly, and a tight hug strangles her. She doesn’t mind, because she thinks this is definitely not in Heaven, because in Heaven, Changmin doesn’t cry, and maybe, she thinks, she doesn’t want to be go there, or anywhere, without Changmin.
