Chapter 2:
When MyungSoo came back to the hallway where the surgical ward was, he couldn’t help but notice the appearance of two strangers. They were a middle-aged couple and definitely that SungYeol boy’s parents, MyungSoo could tell it only by watching behind their backs the way they continuously glanced at the front door of the ward. Somehow the couple looked so familiar to him, as if he had seen them before. The boy thought but then quickly wiped the idea away. He was kind of reserved and anti-social so almost of his acquaintances were with others in the same age with him, which came out from work and university. He didn’t know many people in Seoul.
WooHyun who was sitting at the edge of the row looked up and found MyungSoo approaching them. He smiled a little (Even when he tried so hard to smile, MyungSoo still found the tiredness and worry in his eyes) and called out softly (which was quite strange, comparing to his usual playful shell. But anyway, WooHyun always looked different when it came to works so why did MyungSoo need to feel curious about?):
“Are you okay?”
Me? Okay? I should be the one who ask you about that. The question was about to slip out of the tongue but luckily MyungSoo had bit his lip back. If he were the inspector, he would certainly give WooHyun some days to rest before going back to work. Yeah, if MyungSoo were the inspector… The boy stared blankly at the older and nodded his head quietly, the act somehow made him feel a bit dizzy. Okay, he had been underwater for almost 10 minutes and then lost about half of his blood to save a stranger, how could he not feel dizzy, seriously?
The couple noticed the coming of another person and quickly turned around to have a better view of their son’s savior. Both the husband and wife bowed down at him (which made MyungSoo feel a bit uncomfortable and awkward) and said continuously. Their words sounded choked:
“Thank you very much for your help… Really, we don’t even know what to say now… There’s nothing can express our gratitude towards you. We… Huh... MyungSoo-ssi…?”
The wife tilted her head and spoke surprisingly after seeing the young boy’s face; astonishment could be read clearly on her worried face. Her husband also looked up after hearing his wife’s voice; he also couldn’t look more surprised.
Behind their backs, MyungSoo could see WooHyun stare at him questioningly. His eyes widened and he was mouthing something looked like: “Hey, you know them?”
Seriously, this world was so small.

MyungSoo didn’t come from Seoul. His hometown wasn’t Seoul and he had just moved to the city about seven years ago, because of his study and carrier. MyungSoo’s parents and family had been living in Jeolla province and didn’t have any idea to leave and move with him, so the boy lived all by himself. Things were easy at first when he was still a student, MyungSoo could stay at dormitory of his university during four years studying there. But after graduating, the boy didn’t have another choice but have to move out and find his own place to live, which was kind of hard. MyungSoo couldn’t find an apartment immediately so he had to sleep in his friends’ house and even the local library for almost two weeks, before one day he found a small advertisement on a newspaper. A middle-aged couple wanted to rent their spare apartment to someone who’s in need with a reasonable price, and definitely MyungSoo was that someone, so he took the opportunity without thinking twice. The boy met the couple in that day and they had already come to terms, as MyungSoo had a nice profile and ID so it didn’t take him much time to convince the landlord. Two days later, the boy moved in his new home, aka the couple’s spare apartment and he had been staying there up until now, for about three years.
Though, there was only one thing he had never told his landlord and it seemed that his landlord had never known about his so-called secret. MyungSoo had never told them that he was a detective, but it was because of a certain reason. Somehow the couple didn’t like the fact that someone relating to police rented their house so at first they had made it clear to MyungSoo that they would never accept him if he was a police, or even worked for them. At that time he was too desperate to have a place to live, so MyungSoo decided to swallow the word detective down his throat.
Anyway, that was how he met SungYeol’s parents.
But seriously, he had never met SungYeol until that fateful day he found the boy underwater, being killed and was at the edge of the death. Usually once a month he would send his rent straight into the couple’s bank account, they hardly met each other and MyungSoo didn’t even know where his landlord were living, let alone knowing that they did have a son who was at the same age with him (or at least he guessed). They rarely talked about themselves and MyungSoo found that it was kind of rude if he was too curious about others’ business (and in fact, he hardly felt concerned about things around him, though he did have sharp eyes) so the boy had never asked them about their lives.
Yep, he had never felt curious, until the moment he knew that they were parents of a victim he had just saved.
“Well, I don’t know that he’s your son…”
The boy spoke, breaking the awkward silence among them. The woman burst into tears again, which made MyungSoo startled and he couldn’t help but feel sorry as if he really had done something wrong.
Her husband wrapped his arm around and pulled her into an embrace, patting her back lightly in a reassuring manner. His eyes travelled up and gave MyungSoo a grateful, yet apologetic look:
“I’m really sorry MyungSoo-ssi, my wife is too scared about SungYeol’s condition. He’s our only son and we have never thought something like that could happen to him…”
To that whole point, MyungSoo did feel sorry and sympathetic towards them. Who couldn’t feel like that if the one lying in that surgical ward was their child? Things happened too suddenly and maybe even in their dream, they had never expected to meet that kind of horrible encounters. After all, they were just a normal family with father, mother and son living happily together, or at least MyungSoo thought that.
“I can understand Mr. Lee. Hope that he will be fine soon.”
Inattentively MyungSoo feel like his words were just useless, because after all it couldn’t heal the pain inside the couple’s hearts or ensure that their son could be safe. But as if knowing the thoughts deep down his mind, the middle-aged man had nodded his head and mouthed a small “thank you” with him. The action somehow made MyungSoo feel warm again.
The sound of WooHyun’s phone ringtone startled all of them and the Namstar quickly slipped to the outside of the hall. MyungSoo knew it was definitely SungGyu calling; WooHyun used that ringtone only for him.
“You know him, that policeman?”
“Yeah… We’re… friends.”
MyungSoo said uncertainly, hoping that his colleagues hadn’t said anything to the couple about his job. But it seemed that his worry was meaningless, because the others didn’t look like they had known something.
Still, he needed to tell HyungSik and WooHyun not to say anything.
“Hey MyungSoo.”
WooHyun called him as he popped his head around the corner of the hall, sending his dongsaeng a meaningful glance. MyungSoo made an apology with the couple and quickly approached the older boy. They walked in silence to the balcony outside.
“They have just found another victim. That guy isn’t as lucky as that SungYeol, he was dead already.”
The sergeant said immediately and MyungSoo raised an eyebrow questioningly at him.
“You haven’t known? Okay I will tell you now. The guy who you have saved this night was one of a serial murderer’s victims. You know about the serial murders right? Don’t tell me that you don’t know.”
“Of course.”
To that point, MyungSoo had to say that he had understood what WooHyun meant. Well, he did work for the police station, but recently the boy had to solve a family abuse so he hadn’t seen SungGyu or WooHyun often much. Besides, detailed information about that kind of criminal affair needed to be kept in secret so they hardly talked to each other about those things. It wasn’t MyungSoo’s task so he just concerned about it as a horrible and disgusting crime.
“The victim was shot to death and now we need to take out the bullet in SungYeol’s body and send it to the forensic laboratory. Even when we have known for 90% it was that monster, we still need to check it.”
“You just have to wait for the operation to be over; I think it doesn’t take long hyung.”
“I know, but…” WooHyun paused and MyungSoo could see the uncertainty in his eyes. The older boy thought a bit and finally said in a careful manner: “SungGyu sounded tired and I don’t know if he’s strong enough to continue investigating. He hasn’t been sleeping for almost three days.”
It’s not like we don’t know about you and SungGyu hyung’s affair. MyungSoo was about to say that but finally just rolled eyes and sighed worriedly. The two boys looked up at the sky where the break of dawn was on its way coming soon, signaling the end of night time. MyungSoo looked down at his watch just to find that it had already 4AM.
“WooHyun hyung, the operation has been over!”
HyungSik’s voice echoed from the hallway and WooHyun quickly ran back to the surgical ward, following behind was MyungSoo. They saw the nurses and doctors pull the patient to the recovery room, while the main doctor who had done almost the operation was staying back talking to SungYeol’s parents.
“What about his condition now doctor?”
WooHyun asked and MyungSoo took a small glance at the victim’s mother just to find that she was still crying hard. It wasn’t a good sign.
“Well, he’s kind of safe now, the operation’s successful. But the patient is having a mental shock. I’ve just asked his parents and known that he did have serious accident years ago and nearly pass away so this time it will take a bit longer to gain his consciousness back.”
“I see…” WooHyun mumbled, he definitely was feeling disappointed. “Okay, we’ll wait for him to wake up. Oh, by the way, doctor can you give me the bullet taken from the patient’s body? We need it for the investigation.”
“Of course, I will go and take it for you now.”
The doctor said and left immediately. WooHyun stared blankly at his blouse for a while until it disappeared completely at the corner of the hall, then turning back and asked MyungSoo:
“You should go home now MyungSoo, you still have to work today. I will give you a lift.”
“Okay hyung.”
He answered casually and though feeling slightly hesitant, finally MyungSoo still turned around to say goodbye to the old couple.

“Kim MyungSoo, do you understand what I’ve just said?”
The seriousness, yet loudness in the inspector’s voice pulled MyungSoo out of his dreamland and the boy nearly fell off from his chair. As usual the boy came to work at 7.30AM but the lack of sleep had knocked him down so finally after staying awake for one hour, slowly he drifted off and totally fell asleep at his desk. Almost of his colleagues had known about what had happened last night, so they were understanding and let him sleep in peace. Yes, all of them, except for the superior Tablo.
“I’m sorry sir; I promise that I will never sleep in working time again.”
MyungSoo scratched his head in embarrassment after being fully awake and Tablo just stared intensely at his inferior:
“You better not again. Anyway,” he paused, waiting to have a full attention from MyungSoo: “there’s something I need to tell you now.”
“What’s wrong sir?”
Don’t tell me that you’re about to cut down on my wage again. MyungSoo thought while crossing his fingers behind his back. But Tablo didn’t seem like noticing the worry on the younger boy’s face. He thought for a while before saying:
“The superior have just deiced that you should move to work with the team investigating the serial murders.”
“What…about my remaining works here?”
“Kevin Kim will be in charge of them for you.”
“You mean that overseas Korean who have just come here from Australia?”
“Who else? Do you have any problem with him?”
“No, of course not.” MyungSoo said in an uncertain manner. Seriously, what could that guy Kevin do? He even didn’t know how to speak Korean properly.
“You will start your work with them from today. The case is getting worse and worse, we haven’t found the murderer yet and the media has started criticizing us because of that fact. We need to find a solution soon and I believe in you.”
Really? You? Believe in me? MyungSoo nearly choked with his words.
“Oh, by the way, our office is about to have some students majoring in sociology and psychology. They come here to practice and gain some experience so be nice to them okay? Tell the others too.”
“Yes I will sir.” MyungSoo replied, trying not to sound too sniffed.

“I’m Lee TaeMin, coming from sociology major. Nice to meet you.”
Two boys came to the chamber of SungGyu’s team early in the evening of that day and introduced themselves. The policemen and detective gave the first boy an encouraging smile before turning to the second one who surprisingly didn’t look even a bit worried:
“Hello, nice to meet you, I’m Lee SungJong coming from psychology major. Hope that all sunbaes around here will help me to do my search and report.”
MyungSoo noticed that TaeMin did move slightly in an attempt to be closer to the SungJong boy and if his eyes were not mistaken, then he was sure that he did see their hands intertwine behind their backs.
Well well, a young couple?
He didn’t know and MyungSoo thought that he didn’t need to know.
The rest of the day, SungJong and TaeMin just worked for the files of some old criminal cases. MyungSoo had just moved to the team but it looked as if SungGyu had waited for that day to come for so long, because just when the boy popped his head around the door, the lieutenant had pulled him into the chamber and shoved into his hands tons of files and reports.
“Do you have any idea with that ‘I am them’ thing?”
WooHyun asked and MyungSoo just shrugged lightly while continuing reading the other reports. There were totally 5 people who were killed and only one survivor but hadn’t been awake yet. The murderer was kind of fast and self-possessed and the way the victims were killed was definite and static, though the methods were different. One was strangled, one was shot, one was cut throat by a knife, one was hit continuously at head and one was poisoned; not to mention SungYeol’s case.
“The victims are all young, their ages is from 19 to 26.” MyungSoo stated: “We can discount the supposition that they were killed because of money. If the murderer were simply just a robber then their property must have been taken and they didn’t need to be killed.”
“We all know about that MyungSoo. That bastard definitely is having some kind of mental disease. Sick monster!”
“Calm down WooHyun.”
SungGyu said and placed his hand lightly on the younger’s shoulder, the boy was trembling for his anger. MyungSoo looked at them briefly through the corner of his eyes and couldn’t help but wonder when they would become a real couple after nearly two years playing the game “cat and mouse” together.
As WooHyun and MyungSoo were leaving SungGyu’s room, the two boys accidentally bumped into SungJong who had just come out of the chamber. The files in his hands were all over the ground and without any hesitation the older boys had bent down and collected them for him.
“Really sorry, I didn’t concentrate on my way.”
SungJong said while giving them a bright smile. WooHyun grinned and asked the younger in a playful manner:
“Where’s your boyfriend? I thought you two stick together.”
So he did notice the hand holding part, MyungSoo thought.
“TaeMin? He’s not my boyfriend, juts best friend. We’ve known each other since high school.” The petite boy giggled lightly and added: “But yeah, I admit that sometimes he did act as if he were my boyfriend. He takes care of me too much.”
“MinHo won’t be happy much if he knows about that.”
WooHyun whispered while nudging MyungSoo and jerked his head continuously towards the hallway of the building. The younger’s gaze followed the direction just to find MinHo talking to TaeMin in front of the vending machine. The tips of his ears were turning red, seriously. It was kind of amusing seeing someone like Choi MinHo like that, MyungSoo concluded and looked back at SungJong and WooHyun:
“I’m Nam WooHyun, sergeant Nam WooHyun. And here is Kim MyungSoo. He’s a detective.”
“Really? Well, nice to meet you WooHyun hyung and MyungSoo hyung. Hope that we can be friends.”
SungJong chirped soundly with them and MyungSoo couldn’t help but smile at the little boy as they shook hands.
Having a new friend wasn’t a bad idea much, after all.
