I've been doing it for years now. Hiding it hoping no one ever figures out what I'm doing. I've seen the websites, I'm even a member on one or two. Still I feel like I can't tell people that I'm doing it too. ( Clicky Clicky... )
Howdy. Wandered over by way of the OT3 friending meme. :)
Yes and yes. Never used to write fanfic--why bother, when everything I'd read was such drivel? Then Captain Jack Harkness entered my life and broke me.
At least I've found people in DW/TW fandom who write stuff that isn't drivel.
But since it has a reputation as drivel, I find I'm vaguely guilty about it. Less likely to admit I write fanfic than that I write smut. More likely to admit I'm kinky, or pagan, or reluctantly believe in reincarnation than to stand up and go, "Hi, I'm Canaan, and I write fanfic." Heck, even Canaan is a pseudonym, just to make sure some future prospective employer doesn't google me and find out I write fanfic.
I think, perhaps, it's that no one is ever going to look at us and believe that we kill people or do unspeakable things to farm animals: If someone proposed such a thing, you could laugh it off. But you know, they really *could* believe that we write fanfic, and then they'd look at us funny. And if there's something more embarassing than having people who like you look at you funny, I can't think what it is off the top of my head.
