[Newz] In case you're in the habit of eating your soup without looking at it first...

... here's a recall you should probably know about.

http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/generalmills11_08.html

From the article itself:
A production error resulted in a limited number of cases of Progresso Light Vegetable and Noodle soup being mislabeled as Progresso Hearty Tomato soup. Mislabeled cans have the code date 19May10 NV VN-3 on the bottom of the can, but are mislabeled as Progresso Hearty Tomato soup.

OKAY. Let's take a moment here.

You have every right to be a little irritated that the tomato soup you bought is actually 'light' veggie noodle soup. If I buy something, I generally do expect the product contained inside to be the product advertised on the label. That's just common sense.

Mistakes do happen. It's a fact of life. Oops, some of the cans got switched. Yikes. No need to panic ... the company's willingly offering a refund.

HERE'S THE KICKER.

The article goes on to warn consumers NOT TO EAT THE SOUP if they are allergic to soy, milk, or egg products. Let's do a little miniature scenario here, shall we?

Jane grabs a can of Hearty Tomato Soup, pulls back the lid, and pours it into a pan. 'Oh wow,' she says. 'This looks like noodle soup! It's got broth!' Jane is allergic to egg noodles. What's the logical next step? Does she heat up the soup and eat it anyway? Is Jane so stupid that she blindly follows what's on a label, despite what her eyes and nose are telling her? Or does she do the smart thing and carefully dispose of the soup she cannot eat, contacting the company for a refund before landing in the hospital?

The article says that nobody has had an allergic reaction so far. It just sort of boggles me that American 'culture' is so zombified that we require a warning to not eat soup that doesn't match the label.

Correct warnings such as 'Warning: Product contains milk/peanuts/allergen whatever' is perfectly acceptable. There are certain 'warning labels' however that go beyond the reasonable and straight into the retarded. Not because companies feel the need to defend themselves against it, or that people are stupid enough to do these things -- but because people are so stupid and so greedy that after doing one of those stupid things, they try to foist responsibility for the action on the company! 'Well gee, nobody TOLD me I might fall off this stepstool -- I'm going to sue the guys that made it!' Personal responsibility gone RIGHT out the window.

There you have it. A non-political post for the day. *sagenod*

newz, whiskey tango foxtrot, food, what do you think?
