... so named because of the camouflage stripey colors of the Trekking XXL my mother gave me :) I didn't want to do something lacey, because that would look just silly, and I never ever want to do a plain stockinette sock again in my LIFE, and I had been thinking about making the Jaywalkers anyway, so here I am.
They're halfway finished, and I'm hoping, quite strongly, that I didn't make the leg too long. The pattern uses up a bit more yarn than the typical sock, and I was eyeballing the rest of the skein going 'Is this really going to last through a second sock?' I even went to the local post office and asked if they had a gram scale with which I could measure the unused portion of the yarn, to see if I still had half. They only had an ounce scale there (damnit) and I'm not entirely convinced that it was measuring properly, so I'm rather skeptical about supposedly having more than enough yarn to complete another sock.
I've finished the first, but instead of sewing up the toe with Kitchener stitch I just left it on a pair of spare #2 needles (the size I used for the whole sock) and I'm going to leave it until I finish the second one. If I manage to finish it, I'll sew both toes and call it good. If I can't finish the second one, then I'll curse a bit and get mad and yell for a bit and
nyterose will go hide or something, and then I'll suck it up and frog a sock and a half. I don't want to do too much disaster planning, but I'll probably frog back to 15 or 20 pattern repeats (it's only a two-row repeat, and I did 25 the first time 'round) and work from there. It'll mean more weaving-in of ends, but I'll manage.
This confirms it, though: I NEED TO GET A GRAM SCALE. I have never really been concerned about this problem before, as I usually make most of my socks around five inches tall max unless I REALLY feel like it -- or, as in this case, if I just make like the Energizer bunny and keep going and going and decide that 25 repeats would be a good place to stop.
I've decided that I do indeed like the pattern. Much like the Monkey socks I made a little while back, I caved in and decided to do another one of the MOST popular Ravelry sock patterns out there. 2817 projects can't be wrong, right? The pattern did turn out quite nice and having looked at the other project pictures (Ravelry is SO awesome for this) I think I want to make another pair, this time with KnitPick's Felici and almost certainly in the red and black Firefighter colorway since they don't seem to have a PURPLE colorway, damn them. I may also make the lacey mod that some use and instead of doing a kf&b for the first and last stitch of the pattern, do k1-yo ... yo-k1. I think that would look nice. *sagenod*
