2dozenowies Prompt: Routine Surgery

Summary: Rodney uncrossed his arms and waved a hand. "Minor detail."

Rodney crossed his arms and glared at Sheppard, who was asleep. "See, I told you we could look forward to seeing Sheppard in the next bed," he told Teyla.

Teyla shook her head. "I believe you were implying that Ronon was going to be the cause of Colonel Sheppard ending up in the infirmary, not the colonel's appendix."

Rodney uncrossed his arms and waved a hand. "Minor detail."

In the next bed, Carson grunted as he pushed himself upright. "Hardly minor when it bursts while he's distracting Dr. Weir so you can get your revenge on the Xirons," he muttered, swaying a bit. Ronon immediately moved to support Carson, who leaned again him. "Help me to John's bed," he ordered.

"You sure about that?" Ronon asked, even as he helped Carson across the two feet of space and onto the colonel's bed, lying on his side next to Sheppard. Teyla moved Carson's IV pole closer so he didn't accidentally pull out the tubing.

"Of course I'm sure," Carson said as he stroked John's hair back. "I still can't believe you infected the Xiron population with random shock nanites."

"Not the entire population!" Rodney protested. "Just a statistically chosen sample will experience shocks at times determined by a mathematical algorithm! It's better than just nuking the planet with an overloaded naquadah generator!"

Carson closed his eyes as he leaned his head against Sheppard's. "And John wanted to do that." Carson didn't sound surprised that his lover wanted to destroy an entire planet in revenge. Not that Rodney thought Sheppard would have gone through with it. Not without Rodney's help.

Ronon shrugged. "Takes out all of them. Although McKay's idea was kinda fun, too."

"Thank you," Rodney said.

Sheppard shifted in the bed, wincing in his sleep. Carson made a soothing noise before turning to the others. "How long had he been in pain before he collapsed?"

Rodney, Ronon, and Teyla looked at each other. "He had been sparring in the gym with Ronon," Teyla finally said.

"He did take a hit in the stomach," Ronon admitted.

"He was so focused on getting you back I don't think he would have admitted to having a limb cut off," Rodney said with a shrug.

When Carson looked guilty, Teyla stepped closer. "He loves you. Finding you and returning you to Atlantis was more important to him than any pain he might have been experiencing. Just like being with him is more important than the pain you are in now," she said pointedly.

"This is minor compared to acute appendicitis," Carson said, his thumb rubbing up and down Sheppard's forearm. "Believe me, I know." He lowered his head to Sheppard's. "God, love, how were you able to function?" Carson's hand moved from Sheppard's arm to just above the bandage covering the appendectomy incision.

"You're on painkillers, how do you know if it's worse?"

Carson didn't look at Rodney. "Because I've had appendicitis. The pain I'm in now is nothing compared to what John must have been suppressing, painkillers or not."

"He'll say it was worth it."

Carson turned his head to look at Ronon. "Aye. My life is more important to him than his own. His life is more important to me than my own. An argument neither of us will win."

"No," Dr. Biro interrupted, "but I can put it on hiatus, as it is time for me to check on Colonel Sheppard and Dr. Beckett." She frowned at the shared infirmary bed. "You know damn well those beds are only meant for one, Carson."

Carson moved closer to Sheppard. "So get a bigger bed in here," he told her.

"Order one from Earth," she retorted. "And you three," she said, looking at Rodney, Teyla, and Ronon, "out. Visiting hours are over."

Teyla and Ronon nodded and took their leave of Carson. Rodney was regarding the bed. When Biro crossed her arms and tapped her foot at him, he shrugged. "Just figuring out if Radek can weld the two beds together," he told her.

"Out!" she ordered. "I'll tell you when Dr. Zelenka can come in here and start welding beds," she added with a wink.

Rodney glanced at Carson, who had his eyes closed as he rested next to Sheppard, hand still on Sheppard's stomach. "Take care of them," he said as he left, reaching for his radio. "Zelenka, it's McKay. Got a new project for you."
