1- today is Gaston Julia's birthday. If you go to google, they have a banner, and clicking on the link provides images of some quaternion julia sets( and some boring 2d ones). soooooo pretty... it reminds me of glass flows. Unfortunately, they googledotted (for lack of a better word) the really pretty pictures from the astronomy department at Swinburne University of technology in Australia.
2- today's 8 bit theater (nuklearpower.com, #379) is soooooooo wonderful/awful. especially if you like making fun of the stereotypes of goths.
3- the reason for the previous post was my motherboard's onboard soundcard died (guess why: SB16 in other soundcard was too loud and burned it out. or maybe ground loop. i dunno, really. i'll prob'ly poke it again in a year and find it works fine.) this resulted in the following:
borrowing a M$ windows sound system ("WSS"). Dicovered that it hates my computer. Works fine under linux or windows on the other machine, but my ISA slot is broken or something.
swapping in the SB16 i have in the windows machine. it works fine, but is crappyish sound quality. and i sort of need it for compatibility reasons (the reason i have it is compatibility with old dos games)
swapping the WSS around several times more. to taunt myself, i guess.
swapping in the SB PCI 512 ("OEM" version of the SB Live!, but I purchased it from CompUSA)
finally receving a YMF724 which works perfectly fine. have some issues with the headphone connector picking up some 60Hz hum, and it distorts if i turn the volumes up too loud (like turning digital audio up above 92%, or having digital audio * master volume > about 62%), but, hey, a sound card means i can listen to my music = happy me!
although i did get to show off my absurdly silly serial audio hack. other than saying that you can get understandable (3 bit, 11 kHz) sound from almost any machine with a serial port (plus a speaker), i'll document it later.
