London-Oxford-Cambridge Day 1

Aug 22, 2013 09:35

Well that was a pretty exiting first day!

Not on the overnight bus at 11pm and was escorted to a bunkbed that was to be mine for duration of the journey. It was actually quite comfortable. None of the issues from the previous journeys. The heating was just right, no screaming babies, no smelly, Russian, garbage men(!!!!). All in all, it was a fairly pleasant journey, it would simply appear that I have an inability to sleep on a moving bus. At the end of the journey we were all awaken and presented with a breakfast bar and a carton of juice, just to round off our trip.

Having arrived in London on wed morning, I spent a good portion of my day in London. I walked around Piccadilly/Soho in the morning and due a closing down Japanese department store, I managed to pick up both a SMAPXSMAP photo book and the kis-mai-ft2 an-an all for around £25. A bargain if you ask me. I then went to the new shop of one of the retailers and because I had the flyer that they had given me in the old store in my hand (I had used it for direction) I was given a new bookmark! How fun is that!

After shopping in Piccadilly I headed towards Westminster, via Trafalgar square and saw bigben strike 1. I had thought about heading into the cathedral but a combination 'dear lord what was I thinking, attempting Westminster during tourist season' and a lack of actual cash in my purse quickly put a stop to that thought. After this, I headed into Oxford in a vain attempt to escape the heat. It didn't work, Oxford was just as warm. :( As a Scot, I'm just not made any temperature above cold!

The evening was spent catching up with Rena, before we headed to see Neil Gaimon and Philip Pullman. WOW!!!!! It was such a good evening. Time flew by. A lot of the discussion centred around the books the two authors had read curing their childhood, and it was interesting hearing their different opinions on what was important to them in a book/comic. Afterwards they signed our books, and so I now have a signed copy of 'Ocean at the End of the Lane' and 'Lyra's Oxford'. All in all, an evening well worth a trip to the other side of the country.

For pictures see Facebook and foursquare! I haven't quite figured how to get them from my cloud to my tablet yet....
