The second (and last) film we saw at this years Scotland Loves Anime fest was Wolf Children Ame and Yuki.
Unlike last night I did not come away from it scratching my head trying to figure out what it was all about. Instead I came out feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. It was an amazing film.
My Highlights:
Ame and Yuki. It goes without saying that Ame and Yuki were absolutely adorable. Particularly Ame! I loved that we got to see them grow up (until the ages of 10 and 11) and watch as the chose which path their lives should take.
The grumpy granpa (I can't remember his name). He pretty much rallied everyone together and got them to help out, but took none of the credit. He was just too awesome!!!
Sohei. For a kid his age (same age as Yuki) he was pretty damn awesome.
As you can tell, the characterisation in this film ticked pretty much every box for me! The story could have been awful and I would have still watched it for the brilliant characters.
The soundtrack was, again, really good. The type of soundtrack that you could put on in the background as you become absorbed in a book. I'm still humming the song that played during the credits as I type this.
Criticisms:
The bestiality at the beginning kinda really squicked me! There really wasn't any need for it. 'Nuff said.
It was a little slow in the beginning, but once we got into the main chunk of the plot it picked up to a really good pace.
The seemingly lack of repercussions at the end. At the age of 10, Ame goes off and lives in the forrest. There was a few brilliant seens showing how his mum was, naturally, rather reluctant to let him, but once they got past that, that was it. He went off, she was happy for him and presumably nothing else was said. This is where the film ends. But what about after?! Surely someone will notice that suddenly there is only one child instead of two and are going to ask some pretty awkward questions. OK, I'm probably just nitpicking at this point, simply because of the lack of negative things I have to say about this film! It was simply that awesome!
Overall - Definitely a film I will see again.Like I said, it ticks pretty much all the boxes and as definitely worth the money spend on the tickets (as well as last nights tickets).
Also, this was the one film that bet Brave at the Japanese Box Office! Need I say more?!
