I'm sure you all have seen the movie "Fight Club". I personally consider it one of my top 5 favorite movies ever, so I was very pleased to get the book for my birthday (thanks, Sis!). The book is the debut by Chuck Palahniuk ("Paula-Nick"), and it includes an essay about the work by the author.
I really consider the movie to be a masterpiece, so I was a bit dubious the book could live up to the movie. Well, I consider them to be about the same. The movie is remarkably faithful to the book, often quoting it directly. The ending is slightly different, and the book is perhaps more "hard core" (for example, in the movie, they don't kill anyone). But all in all, the vision is totally preserved.
That would be the only disappointing thing I could say about the book: if you've seen the movie, there isn't a lot new. The book is a slim 218 pages, and though that might sound disappointing at first, it isn't. The book is tight and lean. Words are not misplaced, and nary an unnecessary word is present, which has the effect of ratcheting up the intensity.
What's more, if you aren't intimately familiar with the story, you could gain so much out of reading it through a second time, just like watching the movie again. This thing has replay value, for sure.
(By the way, I could probably go on and on about "Fight Club" in general. If you want an earful, buy me a beer sometime and ask me about it. ;-) )
Yep, this book is a keeper. I'm really looking forward to reading the other Palahniuk that my sister got me, "Choke".
