“Damn, what the hell do you think? Why do you NOW want to leave, Kisaki? Just because we want to become major musicians some day doesn’t mean we’re ‘cheating’ on music or something, you know?“ Kaoru was more than a little angry. And not only that. He was also desperately trying to persuade their bassist to stay with them. Kisaki looked away.
“I know, Kaoru. And it’s not that I don’t like you anymore or something like that. But please try to understand me. I like being Indie and I want to stay Indie. Major is not for me.“ With those words, he left. The door fell shut behind him, the click sounding like the last one ever, echoing in Kaoru’s ears a long time after the other had left the band forever.

“So, now we get to introduce ourselves properly! I’m Die, nice to meet you.“ Die shook their new bassist’s hand very enthusiastically, smiling his toothpaste - ad smile.
Kaoru was next, Shinya waiting politely for his turn. They had met this guy before and only two weeks ago, they had agreed on asking him if he wanted to join their band.
“I wonder where Kyo is. Do you think he overslept again?“ Kaoru asked, after Shinya had finished. Die shrugged and Shinya didn’t say anything. The bassist raised his eyebrows.
“Does he oversleep often?“ he wanted to know. The others laughed a bit.
“Secretly, we call him Dwarf Sleepy sometimes,“ Die said.
“You call me what?!“ Everyone turned around. Kyo had just opened the door and stood there, his hair a little messed up. He watched the others with kind of a what-the-hell-are-you-talking-about-when-I’m-not-there - look. Then his eyes fell on the new band member.
“Oh shit, I totally forgot about that one!!“ he exclaimed, rushing in and closing the door behind him. “Hi, I’m Kyo, nice to see you here.“ The vocalist held out his hand, smiling friendly and the blue-haired man in front of him took it, shaking slightly and smiled.
“I’m Toshiya.“
Summer 1996
- beginning of June
“Hehe, they are really crazy after us...“ Die said, watching the crowd outside shouting for Dir en grey to come back on stage and play another Encore. They had already played two, so they were exhausted and decided not to go on stage again.
“I love lives...“ Die said, grinning, “But the parties afterwards are even better - anyone who wants to go out drinking with me?“ Kaoru and Shinya agreed on joining. “What about you, Kyo, Toshiya?“ the red-haired guitarist asked, but the two just shook their heads.
“I’m too tired, sorry,“ they said in unison and then stared at each other, puzzled.
“Hey, don’t get lost in each other’s eyes, will you?“ Die joked when they were still staring after one minute. Both looked away quickly, occupying themselves with changing their clothes and wiping away their make up. Minutes later, the other three were gone. Toshiya was ready to go home and stood up from his chair, turning around happily and about to say something when he caught Kyo staring at the mirror absent-mindedly. There were fresh wounds on his chest where he had scratched himself during their show. Kyo stood up and searched in his bag. He pulled out a tube of cream, rubbing a good amount of it on his scratches. Then he put the cream back, bandaged his chest and put on a new shirt.
“OK, I think we can go now...“ Kyo said, looking around the room again and then leaving with Toshiya, who was a little wrapped up in his thoughts. Since the band did still not have a lot of money, they had decided that Toshiya should move in with Kyo. The vocalist had felt a little uncomfortable with that at first, but now he was already used to sharing his flat with the blue-haired bassist. They arrived at the huge apartment building and got out of the car. The elevator didn’t work, so they climbed up the stairs to the 6th floor. Toshiya was a little out of breath, not being used to all the stairs yet.
“You’ll get used to it in no time,” Kyo said and opened the door, “although I thought you were more athletic, given the way you look.” Toshiya looked down at himself. He was tall and skinny, right, but did that mean he had to be athletic?
Summer 1996
- beginning of July
It was Dir en grey’s one week holiday. And it was hot. Hot as in hell. Toshiya tried to produce some cool air with his paper fan, but it was totally in vain. Kyo’s apartment didn’t have an air conditioning system, so both of them were damned to either live with it or commit suicide. The bassist got up from his place next to the open window and walked out of his room into the kitchen where Kyo was busy doing something Toshiya couldn’t really figure out.
“What are you doing, Kyo-kun?” he asked and the vocalist turned around.
“Me?” he said and smirked, then looked at the sink before which he was standing. Toshiya approached his friend and looked into the sink. Kyo had prepared two small plastic bags with ice cubes.
“What are those for?” Toshiya asked curiously. Kyo laughed.
“To cool us down, stupid,” he explained and handed his band mate one of the bags, “And later we can go to the shopping centre and get some cool air. I’m really sorry I don’t have air condition…” Kyo sighed. Toshiya put his fan on the kitchen table and patted Kyo’s shoulder.
“It’s OK. Don’t worry. As long as I have some chance of not getting grilled, it’s OK,” he joked.
“Maybe you’d been better off at Kaoru’s, Die’s or Shinya’s place. We could ask them if one of them would be able to let you live at his for the summer… What do you think?” Toshiya considered for a second. Kyo looked at him seriously and expectantly.
“No,” he said after some time, “I want to stay here.”
