Kyou looked across the room at her sister, who was sitting in front of the dining room TV watching Pokemon with one of her friends. Her eyes were trained on the screen as Pikachu used an attack on the enemies. She'd started school before Kyou, and had already made friends with a wide-eyed, talkative girl. They were chatting loudly between themselves and laughing occasionally. Her parents were out, buying some more furniture for the house, and for the nursery that would soon be home to her new brother or sister.
"Are you two okay?" Kyou asked, casually opening the fridge. "Would you like anything to eat?" This prompted another round of giggles for an unknown reason.
"Nope." Yuuhi said shortly, not even looking over at the older girl, who rolled her eyes and took a bottle of Aloe Juice out of the fridge.
"Well, I'll be upstairs if you need anything from me." Yuuhi opened her mouth to speak. "Not money. If you spent your allowance on ice cream or princess clothes that's not my fault." Yuuhi closed her mouth, crossing her arms across her chest like the child that she was. Kyou wandered up the stairs, turning off the hall light as she did so.
Upon entering her bedroom she tossed the bottle of juice onto her desk and shut the door behind her, walking over to her laptop and turning it on. She took it over to the large windowsill, sitting on it and staring out of the window while her computer started up. People were walking around, mostly children playing together in the street with chalks. She could see "Christmas is coming!" written in bright colors with a scribbled drawing of Santa Claus next to it.
She smiled to herself. Children were so impatient for Christmas. For her, it was starting to lose it's magic. The lights were just lights, and there was less to be excited about every year as she got too old for lots of gifts and the number dwindled every year.
Kyou got up, retrieving her aloe juice and mp3 player, sitting herself where she’d been before. She took a long drink, before putting the bottle on the white carpet below her. Scrolling through the songs in her mp3 player, she picked her current favorite song and put it on repeat.
She quickly typed her password and looked at the screen as everything loaded up, closing many of the things she had set to automatically start, leaving open only her IM software. Nobody was online, they were probably all off shopping to celebrate the vacation, and buying each other gifts. She'd been given gifts from her friends before she'd moved, and they remained locked in a trunk with the presents she'd bought for her family. After checking her emails - she had none - she turned it off, disappointed.
Kyou looked around the large room. The walls were plain, the default cream color that walls always are when you buy a new house. There was nothing to hold her attention except the cork board covered in photos of her and her friends and the blank white board opposite her bed. The plainness of the room was overwhelming, and she decided that it needed to be painted.
She pulled her phone from her pocket, flipping it open and sending a text to one of her friends back in Osaka. “Saku-chan, I miss you! Hope you’re having fun. ヾ(〃^∇^)ノ.”
She rested her head against the hard wood behind her, closed her eyes and pondered about her new school. Hopefully everyone would be nice and caring. At least she knew someone, and wasn’t totally alone. She made a quick mental note to go and check out the area of her school sometime soon, so she wouldn’t get lost on her first day. She sighed, wishing she had something to do instead of being stuck in the house, babysitting for Yuuhi and her little friend.
