Artist's Point

Backposted.

Went to Artist's Point in Mt. Baker National Park today~ It was actually a short drive to the place, but the border crossing we went to had a long lineup. Way better than Peace Arch, of course, but still long in comparison to the one we usually go through.

After crossing the border, we assumed that there would be a McDonald's somewhere along the way for us to eat breakfast. It turns out everything was farmland. There was nothing but corn fields. And then the road makes a sudden steep turn and we're on this narrow road.

The first little town/village we came across didn't have much. The second town we came across was a little bigger, and it had a bakery. The name was "Harvest Moon Bakery" and it has the best flatbreads. lol. Everything's expensive, but they make it themselves and the ingredients probably come from their farmer neighbours some ways down, and the quality's reaalll good. The flatbreads were realllly goooooodd. And if you wanted your flatbread heated, they'll actually put it in an oven to reheat, instead of sticking it in a microwave like the majority of the urban shop population. And when it's finally done reheating (it took a while), they'll wrap them individually in thick aluminum foil and then hand deliver it to you. And they'll cut it into slices too if you ask. And so that was our breakfast-turned-lunch.

After that, we keep on going. The third and last town was not really a town. It was more of a small collection of government buildings that deal with the park. We learned that we needed a parking ticket and bought one for $5. Because it only cost $5. There was a section of a giant douglas fir tree trunk displayed there and the diameter was longer than I was tall.

We keep going, and the road starts winding more and more, and rising more steeply. Around halfway, we start seeing snow~ By that point, we were really high up and the air gets cooler. We stopped at some part to take photos, and one of the peaks in the (close) distance has a giant glacier on it and it's just really white and pretty. The roads don't have any sort of fencing whatsoever. And they are really narrow.

Finally, we get to Artist's Point! There's lots of people there, and about 1/3 of them gets fined/told off by the park ranger present that they need a parking pass in order to park there. We go walking on snow, and the snow's sort of getting slushy. It was fun~ There were a few dogs. So we go climbing the snowy slopes. Some parts melted and had water on top of the snow making little lakes~ You can also see red streaks of bacteria on some parts of the ground. We keep climbing, not much happens, we take more photos, and then near the end when we were going back down, I walked into a puddle of mud that decided it wanted to be like quicksand. Being ankle deep in mud is not fun. Seriously not fun. And then I got yelled at.

After we leave Artist's Point, we go down a bit, and turn off into a little sideroad to see a waterfall. It was really loud and the water was really blue.

When we were going home, we stopped by this dairy farm near the border and bought two tubs of ice cream, some chocolate milk, and yogourt. lol.

And then we went home.

And now two pics of Artist's Point that I took on my cellphone.
