Beat Super Mario Bros. Wii

I beat Super Mario Bros. Wii, though I didn't bother with the Special World. I actually managed to get through the whole thing with a friend.

Overall opinion? This is definitely a game with highs and lows. There are many terrible levels interspersed among genuinely brilliant ones. Generally speaking, the fortresses and castles were cleverly constructed. Many of the levels in the latter half of the game are trippy with a creative barrage of rotating platforms and moving pipes. In particular, the one sky level with the floating bubbles of water that you had to swim through reminded me of the imaginative and dare-I-say magical feeling Super Mario Galaxy often has. Boss battles, while never breaking the three-hits-and-you-win rule, have a number of interesting twists.

But several levels, mainly in the first half of the game, just suck. Whether it's standing around waiting for deadly sand spouts to rise and fall or getting scrolled off the screen accidentally by your friend, they don't seem to be built with cooperative or compelling gameplay in mind. Later on, when the co-op works, it's pretty fun. When it doesn't, it's the Contra waterfall scenario over and over again. And many times, we couldn't imagine having more than 2 simultaneous players.

Ultimately, this is far from a 10/10 game in my opinion. There are too many weird quirks and inconsistent rules and it's largely missing that magical spirit that Super Mario Galaxy had in spades.
