Well, roughly one year after it happened the first time, it appears that the fire sprinkler pipes broke again and drenched the apartments on this side of the building. I was just sitting here when the fire alarms went off and I left to see what was going on. I don't know if you've ever seen water gushing out of outdoor light fixtures and cascading over siding, but that's what I saw the next unit over. It was raining in the poor lady's apartment. The bitter cold no doubt froze the pipe again and now that we are beginning to thaw, it burst. So I had water in the side closet, kitchen, and part of the bathroom as well, all creeping along the floor and getting the carpet wet. Now there are three industrial-strength fans at work drying things out. Thank goodness for earplugs - it would be like trying to sleep in a windtunnel otherwise.
Fortunately, nothing important was damaged.
It seems that the pipe broke just inches from where it did last time, so someone definitely screwed up when the repair was made before. Inadequate insulation, most likely. The problem with the fire sprinklers, of course, is that it's not a pipe that runs regularly. You've got a lot of water under intense pressure in a pipe that only releases in an emergency.
Alas, the only reason I can have any humor about it is because it happened last year around the same time. Only then, I wasn't there to see it! I swear, the apartments around me looked like Rapture. All we needed was a phonograph recording of Somewhere Beyond the Sea.
