OK just a quick note, then back to studying...
You never really quite appreciate the heating system of your own home until you get a few days where the high is around the freezing mark, the low is worse, and the heating system doesn't work! :(
I woke up yesterday around 1:00pm or so, and my roommate says "By the way, I had to turn off a breaker, and in order to find the right one I had turn turn on and off several of them, so sorry if I killed your clocks or computer or anything..." (in all fairness, that isn't a direct quote, but I don't remember exactly what he said). So naturally, I asked why this breaker needed to be turned off, and he explained that he noticed some flickering lights and such, so he went into the laundry room where the breakers are and noticed a power outlet was "...more than a little warm." That's Brett's way of sarcastically understating the fact that it was fried... I looked at it too... it was borderline electrical fire fried, there are scorch marks from it arcing, and it's a good thing it happened while he was here and awake, rather than us both asleep or gone or something.
So we turned off the breaker and called the landlord and everything, and I noticed it was getting cold in the house (like below 65), so we investigated and it turns out that the power outlet in question, an outlet in the living room, the light in the entryway, the outside light at the front door, and (you guessed it) the furnace (AH!) are all on that one breaker switch. So in the interest of not burning down the house, the breaker is off, and thus so is the furnace. So right now it's about 55 in the house, and I'm using my computer and a space heater (borrowed from the next-door neighbors) to heat my room (and I'm still wearing two shirts--one fleece--and a fleece jacket).
We called the landlord again and said "by the way, our furnace is off too, so could you please make sure the electrician people get here to fix it soon?" And the response was that we are at the top of the priority list and therefore they should be here in the next day or two (that's the "top"?!?). It's a good thing I have three blankets, two comforters, and a 9-inch futon mattress... despite the lack of heat, I was cozy and warm as I slept last night... I froze when I got out of bed.
That's all for now.
