Manga and novels

Hello,
I'm considering buying the manga (namely the japanese volumes after ther the ones published in english. I'm not proficient in japanese but I think I can dig some translation out of it :) )
I'm wondering: at what novel (and chapter)the manga is? I've read that the manga follow quite closely the novel ( at last more closely then the anime).

I think the volume 17 manga is at the same place of novel 8? I have all the manga, and it definitely follows the novels much closer than the anime.
Since I only know the general plots of the novels, I can't say it's accurate, but hopefully this helped?

Thank you, it helped a lot so I can try to plan a "buying strategy" :) my wallet is a bit thin lately ^_^ The manga is going slowly then the novel but I guess it's due to the different media.
Hopefully I'm going to complete the novel collection ( gaiden included) and then start to buy the manga.
