Regarding the issue of how you cram 27 Maohs into 4000 years, they don't all have to have died. Remember that Cheri was Maoh before Yuuri, but she's still alive -- she just stepped down (at least as far as I can remember, it's been a while since I watched the anime). Some previous Maohs may have died young, of course, but I doubt Cheri is the only one to ever step down for whatever reason.
That really makes sense!! But I can't imagine that all the previous Maohs (is that how you spell it?) would have been all gracious about it, but perhaps they are the ones that the Great One punished for disobeying his word.
they're really only mentioned in one of the novels, and not much, (so the site i use for novel bios tells me). but there's no name, just 25th maou and the 'alive/dead' part says alive. this is all it says about him/her: 宮廷画家の機嫌を損ねたため肖像画は描かれていない。（前マ147） 恥ずかしがり屋で、在位中は常に御簾越しに執務を行っていた。（前マ147） 上半身裸で海辺を歩いていると、夏のお嬢ちゃんなどとからかわれた。（前マ148） 退位に当たって魔力を封じ、普通の魔族に戻ると言っていた。（愛181）
