Don’t look back: Chapter 2 - Get Over it
:-.-:
Murata was pacing in circles inside of Shinou's Temple. Thumb under his chin, face frowned in deep thought. The pace quickens.
Think think think...
"Your' thinking too much over nothing my dear Sage."
Murata glared at the man that called him. "I'm not in the mood right now Shinou. I need to figure something out."
"Well, would it make you feel better is I gave you the answer you're seeking?"
"You don't know what I'm thinking Shinou. You can't read minds." Murata said annoyed.
Shinou hummed. "No. actually I can't." he smirked. "But I must say it's not that difficult to figure out what's on your mind my Sage."
Murata snorted.
"It's about my dear descendant isn't it?" his smile hidden when he caught Murata's attention. "Or to be more specific. Why was he the only one that wasn't affected by that strange force?"
Murata greeted his teeth as Shinou laughed at him. How he hated when the damn spirit was right.
"You said you knew the answer."
"What was that? I didn't catch that quite well. Was it a request I just heard? Strange, I wasn't able to hear a 'please'."
"On with it Shinou! I have no time for games." Murata said angrily. He really wished he could hit the blonde right now.
"All right, all right, such bad temper. I think you have spent too much time with Wolfram," he laughed again as Murata threw daggers at him. "It's easy my Sage. That force was also part of the portal's magic."
"The portal? I thought it was Shibuya's doing."
"The Maou's power indeed went out of control. Nonetheless it didn't have anything to do with it. Otherwise you'd had been on the floor the moment it started. It only happened when you tried to get near the gate."
"And it didn't affect Wolfram because..."
"Aren't you slow today? It was because he had permission."
"Permission?"
"Yes. Not only the ruler of Hilf can open that gate, but also he's able to choose who can go through it. He only agreed to let Wolfram go, no one else."
"So that's why he asked us for some of Wolfram's maryouku. So the gate could identify his magic."
"That is correct my Sage."
Murata sighed and glanced over Shinou's Crest. "Wolfram... I wonder how he's doing."
"We'll find out soon. It was our luck that the King of Hilf let us communicate with him every new moon."
Murata nodded, a faint smile appearing on his lips. I hope for you to find peace and happiness Wolfram. You deserve it.
Gentle sunlight struck from the window, warming the entire room.
A bulged on the bed moved, revealing under the covers a person with skin as white as ivory, golden curls that could rival the sunlight.
Wolfram scrunched his face as the light hit his eyes, groaning in discontent and turned to the opposite direction, throwing the covers over his face to shield them from the yellow orb that dared to interrupt his sleep.
He didn't want to get up yet. He wanted to enjoy the softness of the mattress a little more. Wolfram had never been a morning person.
After tossing all over the bed, the blonde demon knew he had to get up, there was no point in staying in bed if he was no longer sleepy. Slowly opening his eyes he sat on the bed and stretched his arms. It had been long since the last time he had slept so well...
He froze. This wasn't his bedroom.
Fully aware that he didn't have his sword, as the trained soldier he was he did the most obvious thing he could think of.
He jumped on the bed, muttering quickly to summon his magic, making a fireball appear on the palm of his hand. The moment the sphere of fire appeared it started to lose it's perfect round form. Wolfram was having problems in controlling his powers. He wasn't in human territory, he was sure of it or he would have been drain the moment he used his maryouku. There was something strange on the flow of magic in this place...
A soft chuckle broke his concentration and the fireball on his palm dispersed. Quickly turning his head to where the sound was emitted, he saw a tall, broad middle-aged man smiling. Honey eyes gazed gently at him, light brown curls decorating his head reaching almost his shoulders. Wolfram remembered now. He wasn't Shin Makoku anymore.
"My, my, aren't we energetic today?" The man spoke.
"Your Majesty." Wolfram bowed. Feeling embarrassed for showing such a display to the ruler of Hilf.
"There is no need for you to be so formal towards me, young one. I'd appreciate it if we treated each other with in a friendlier manner. "
"It's an honor to have your kindness Your Majesty, but I must apologize for the behavior you saw just a moment ago."
The man chuckled again. "Do not worry. I was told by the Great Sage from your world about your ‘fierily' personality. I believe that's how he described you."
Wolfram's cheek turned pink. That damn Sage always saying things that he should keep to himself.
"But still, I apologize for a complete stranger like me to act in such a disgraceful way after you took me into your home..." The demon prince went silent as the monarch raised his hand slowly.
"There is no need, you have done absolutely nothing wrong young one, and you are not a stranger. You are a very special guest," he said. "And what would it take me for you to stop being so formal? Please, call me Hadrid. I wish to be friends with you."
Wolfram couldn't help and think that the man reminded him of Yuuri. Only that this king had a vocabulary of a very distinguished nobleman. Instead, his ex-fiancé's way of talking was no better than a commoners'.
"All right," the blonde said, "then I will ask you to start calling me Wolfram." He finally smiled, sliding gracefully out of his bed.
"Very well, Wolfram," Hadrid said. "Now," he reached to the knob and opened the door. "How about if we have some breakfast?"
"Sounds wonderful."
The king nodded. "I'll have the maids to bring you something to wear and then I'll meet you at the dinning room. Is that okay with you?" Wolfram gave a quick nod. "All right, I'll see you there then." The man said as he turned and left the room. The door clicking softly at is closed.
Wolfram let out a sigh. So far everything was going smoothly. But he couldn't help feel uneasy.
It was the right decision he thought. Yuuri might get upset, but he'll get over soon. With the help of his hussies he'll forget about me in no time. He did it before, why should it be different this time?
He walked towards the window, stroking his stomach gently. He needed to get over it. He now had a new reason to be strong, someone to dedicate his life to, and now that Yuuri wasn't around anymore he could finally breathe. No more double-black Maou to hide from, no more sad and pitiful looks locked on him, no more snickering on his back, no more whores visiting the castle every few days only to disappear into the king's chambers and come out after several hours... no more.
Soft knocks were heard from the other side of the door as it opened slowly. Wolfram turned to see a young maid walked inside with what he assumed was his clothing. She bowed in respect, her long silver hair falling through her shoulders.
The maid started talking to him, but there was something that shocked him. Wolfram couldn't understand a word she was saying. The girl placed his clothes on the bed and talked again, pointing cheerfully at the door. Assuming that she meant that she would wait for him outside to lead him to the dinning room, he could only nod. The young maid smiled and bowed before leaving the room.
Wolfram was left confused, staring dumbfounded at the wooden door. He had just talked to Hadrid a moment ago, so why did he suddenly couldn't understand what the maid was saying to him?
Frowning in thought, Wolfram tried to find some logic to it. Slowly his frown faded from his face as realization came. If he paid attention to it carefully, Hadrid did talk a little funny. His accent was slightly different. He groaned. He had totally forgotten that this was a different world. It was obvious that they talked in another language. He was more than glad that the king was able to talk in Mazoku.
Noticing that he was taking more time than he should, Wolfram walked to the bed to get dressed. He looked at the attire on the mattress. It was a white shirt with sleeves that reached the elbows and a pair of black trousers, nothing too fancy or formal. He was grateful for it. Wolfram didn't want to be pampered. That snobbish brat of a prince had died ages ago.
As he finished fastening the last button of his shirt, Wolfram was thinking. He would have to learn the language from this world as soon as possible. He didn't like the idea of clinging to Hadrid so he could translate him everything. Walking out of his room he saw the maid waiting for him. She smiled and said something. She must be telling him to follow her. He nods. The young girl bows before leading the way towards the dinning room.
Wolfram glanced at everything he could. The walls had soft pink tapestries, unlike the cold gray stone from Blood Pledge Castle. Funny he never considered his home as cold before. He wondered since when that happened. He also noticed little things he didn't seem to know what they were, maybe some things that were from this world that didn't exist in his. Though he swore he had seen some of them before... on Earth maybe? He would have to ask Hadrid about it.
Wolfram was too busy thinking of all the things he would have to ask the king that he didn't notice that they had already arrived at their destination. The maid opened the door for him. The blonde prince nodded in gratitude and stepped inside. He saw Hadrid standing up "I've been waiting for you. Please, take a seat." He said showing him where blonde demon would sit politely.
"I thought you said that there was no need for formalities Hadrid." Wolfram smirked.
The monarch laughed. "Ah, you got me there."
Taking his seat with the gracefulness acquired after all those years of being a prince. "And since that's how is it going to be," Wolfram looked straight to the man's eyes. "There are some things I need to discuss with you."
Yuuri was staring blankly at his paperwork. He had tried reading the document in front of him several times, but he couldn't grasp any or the words in it as if he had forgotten how to understand them. He just couldn't concentrate. He massaged his temple, his morning had been hectic. He woke up with a headache and realizing that all that had happened until now wasn't a dream (or a nightmare) after all, Wolfram was gone. Cheri had just got back from one of her cruises. Yuuri expected her to burst into tears and demand for her son to return to her. But the former Maou smiled sadly and wished for her youngest son to find happiness from wherever he was.
And to add more to his pile of frustration, Greta had just come back from Cabalcade only to find out that her Papa was no longer there. They poor girl had locked herself in her room crying.
Yuuri sighed tiredly. He didn't feel like doing anything lately. He even had cancelled his ‘meetings' for the rest of the month. The somber atmosphere in the castle was getting on his nerves. He knew people were blaming him for the blonde's disappearance. If he were on their place he would blame himself too. Though not fully aware of why, he just couldn't help feeling that way.
One of the things he hoped was that the time difference between Shin Makoku and the other world weren't too different. In fact he didn't want them to be different at all. It was already troublesome with Earth to have another one. What if years passed in Shin Makoku while on that other place only passed a few days or vice versa?
Calm down Yuuri, breathe.
He took a deep breath. He needed to relax. The last thing he wanted was an unhappy Gunter wailing over his king's health. After all those years Gunter still glomped him almost everyday.
"Cheater!" Yuuri smiled sadly. It had been long since he had heard Wolfram call him that. Long before they had broke the engagement. The passionate blonde demon had slowly stopped shouting at him, rant or throw tantrums. He still called him a wimp to time to time, but not with the same intensity as he used to.
The fire of Wolfram's soul had been dying within the years and he didn't notice. The blonde was right next to him and he never notice. He was too blind to see. Thinking that was easier to ignore than to understand. Funny how someone that did everything in his power to make humans and demons to understand each other couldn't even do that with one of his best friends.
Tears were gathering on his eyes. All this time Wolfram had been in pain, everyone knew except him. It had cost him to lose Wolfram to finally see reality and how he regretted it. If only he had paid more attention to him, instead of just running away...
Yuuri placed his elbows on the desk. His forehead resting on his palms, he couldn't contain his tears anymore. "Will you ever forgive me Wolfram?" he said as he cried in silence.
Wolfram was trying to process all the information that was given to him. Repeating slowly to himself the parts that he wasn't sure of.
Not long after arriving and meeting Hadrid, Wolfram had fallen ill. His short journey to Shin Makoku to Hilf had been completely different from the ones from Earth. It had been suffocating, painful and stressful. Too many barriers were on the way that made it almost impossible to pass through. He had been too shock at first that the symptoms didn't appeared after he had laid down to rest a bit. He had a fever for two days and spent the next day sleeping. He got scared at first but Hadrid assured him that he and the baby were perfectly fine.
Wolfram mentioned that this world had things similar to Earth. For example: that thing that looked like three black boxes that emitted sound. If he remembered correctly, Yuuri had said it was called a ‘stare-eeo'. Hadrid wasn't able to confirm anything since he had never been to Earth, but said that it would be normal to have things in common with that world just as it did with Shin Makoku.
He learned that magic in Hilf was different from Majutsu and Houjutsu, in this world they called it Mana. Depending if the people in this world were born with it or not it would be how their life-style would be. Those who didn't have powers were just simple humans and were considered as commoners. Those who had magic were called ‘Wizards' and were above humans in society, they had the similarly of aging three times slower as half-demons did. If Wolfram had been just a fire user he would have been consider someone of a high status, like a Duke. But the fact that he didn't use any supportive instruments (Hadrid mentioned a wand of a staff for example) automatically listed him on the royal status.
He also asked Hadrid about him knowing the Mazoku tongue. The king answered by telling him that his advisor was the one that taught him. The elder man was a historian that loved everything that had to do with ancient history, and that included the small information that it had about Shin Makoku. Wolfram asked if it was possible for the man to teach him how to speak in their native language. Hadrid was pleased to tell him that his friend would be more than honored to.
The sound of the door been opened distracted him. A child that looked no older than fourteen in human age appeared, wearing what Wolfram could identify as earthen clothing. It was the total opposite from Hadrid's royal attire. The teen just strode to the table, ebony hair dancing in the hair at the fast pace from the steps, icy blue eyes glancing a moment at the blonde before looking away, skin pale as Wolframs'. The child sat down. "Sorry I'm late, I went to sleep like at three in the morning this time."
"How many times do I have to tell you not to stay awake all night?"
The boy shrugged. "I'm on holidays... no point on listening."
Wolfram just looked from the teen to Hadrid. They were talking in their native tongue so he had no idea of what was going on.
"I'm sorry Wolfram. Zael here can't comprehend the importance of being the representative of all the people of Hilf."
"Ah, he's the demon boy that you were speaking of?" Wolfram turned to the raven haired one surprised. He could understand him now. Unlike Hadrid the kid had a perfect pronunciation. How many people knew the Mazoku tongue?
"Zael!" the king retorted "Where are your manners? And why are you wearing that? I remember telling you that we had a guest and wanted you to wear what is fit to the future Queen of Hilf."
Zael scrunched her face and said quietly. "I hate dresses."
Wolfram's eyes widen. He was sure that the kid was a boy. He turned to the brown haired man. "I didn't know you had a daughter, Hadrid."
"Ah," Hadrid's reprimanding expression changed to a gentle one and he turned to Wolfram. "It's because she isn't my daughter. She was selected by our goddess to be the next ruler of Hilf a few years ago."
"Your ruler gets selected by god as well..."
"Hmm? Does in Shin Makoku work the same way?"
Wolfram shrugged. "It used to. Shinou was the one who choose the next Maou. But after what happened with the forbidden boxes..." The king looked confused at him. "It's a long story. The thing is that there is no longer need to select a Maou anymore."
"That's cool, I wish it was the same here. I don't feel like becoming a Queen." Zael said as she placed her elbows on the table.
"Zael." The king gave a look at the girl. "You are supposed to act like the fine lady you ought to be."
The girl cocked an eye-brow, showing distaste. "Wearing dresses that look like pumpkins that I can't even walk straight with. Giggling over every stupid thing like an air-headed blonde. No offense," she said quickly to Wolfram. "Talking to other 'ladies' about their stupid clothes or jewelry isn't something I'm looking forward to. Why can't I just wear pants and use my sword?"
"Because it's disgraceful young lady, how is it possible that you're on town all day wearing male clothing and riding that blasted skateboard with all those boys?"
"At least it's better than sitting all damn day learning how to sew! And it's only clothing, pieces of cloth that fit together. I don't care what I wear as long as I feel comfortable in it and I definitely don't feel like that while wearing frilly dresses!"
Hadrid sighed in frustration. This kid was a nightmare. "I apologize Wolfram, you came here to find a little peace but..."
Wolfram chuckled. "It's okay, I ‘m quite entertained actually." To turned to the black haired girl. "By the way, my name is Wolfram. It's a pleasure to meet you Zael."
"Hey, I'm Zael! Nice to meet'cha."
"Zael!"
"What now?" she whined.
"Hey, Zael." The girl looked at the prince. "Hadrid said that you're on town often. Mind if you give me a tour after we finish eating?"
The girl's face beamed. "Of course! I'll show you all my favorite places and oh! I need to show you the new arcade!"
"It'll be nice if you explained him a little bit of our technology young lady. Wolfram's from another world and may find some things unknown to him."
"Oh yeah..." she stared at Wolframs stomach with curiosity. "Is it true that men from your world can get pregnant and that you're carrying one right now?"
Wolfram saw how Hadrid took a deep breath to stop himself from shouting. The girl was really bold. "Why yes, though only the ones from the demon tribe can, humans aren't able as we are. And yes I am pregnant at the moment, by a month and a half."
Zael's eyes almost came out of her sockets. Wolfram for a moment thought that the girl was going to get scared or feel disgusted. He was surprised when she suddenly squealed. "That's so awesome! And I'm going to get to see your belly grow all big a-an-and touch it and feel the baby kick and..." the blonde smiled at the girl's enthusiasm.
"Where's the other father?" the raven girl asked.
Wolfram's smile fell instantly, leaving a thin line.
"That's enough!" Hadrid shouted. "I had it with your disrespect towards Wolfram."
"B-but I-"
"Finish your breakfast. I don't want to hear another word Zael."
Zael only nodded and looked down at her plate. "I'm sorry." She whispered.
"Don't be mad at her, Hadrid. She didn't know, it's not her fault." Wolfram said smiling weakly at him, he looked at Zael. "The other father of my child is in Shin Makoku... with someone else."
"Oh..." was the only thing that Zael said. She didn't need to question Wolfram anymore.
"So... are you still up to showing around?" she looked at him incredulously. "I mean, if you want to."
"Yes! I'd love to!" she said happily, almost jumping off her chair.
Hadrid cleared his throat.
"Oh, I mean... It would be an honor Sir Wolfram."
Wolfram chuckled. "I'll look forward to it, Lady Zael."
"Interesting." Zael said as she walked on the street next to Wolfram.
"What is it?" Wolfram asked.
"Hadrid said that your world didn't have the technology that ours has, for instance you don't have electricity as a source of energy. But you have knowledge of some things that require electricity to work."
Wolfram shrugged. "I've seen them on Earth. That's why I know about them. Yuuri explained them to me when we were there."
"Yuuri? Who's that?"
"Uhm... he's... you see..."
"Ah... it's ‘him' isn't he?" Wolfram nodded. "Okay then, I won't ask anymore. Let's talk about something else."
"Yeah. I wanted to tell you. They also have cars but theirs are kind of different... on Earth, cars have wheels. They don't float like these do."
"Oh, it was like that here, but that was years ago, long before I was born."
"I was wondering. Forgive me if I'm bold but, how old are you?"
"Ha-ha if you think that's bold you need to hang out with me a little more. I'm forty-three, turning forty-four this spring. That would be around fourteen in human years. How about you? I heard that demons age even slower than wizards."
"Eighty-six."
Zael hummed. "You look like you're seventeen... so your kind ages around five times slower..." she said to herself.
Wolfram cocked an eye-brow. "Uh, what are you doing?"
"Ah! Sorry." She said sheepishly. "Habit."
"Right..."
"C'mon I want you to meet some friends of mine." Zael said as she grabbed Wolfram by the arm and started to pull him.
"Are they also wizards?"
"One of them isn't."
"So human and wizards get along in your world?"
"Usually they do. But there are always those who hate what's different from them, like in any world."
They stopped on a red light, people gathering as they waited for the light to change. Cars passed a full speed. Wolfram only saw a blur of colors. Some people were whispering, looking at them curiously. Some of them were watching them confused, some were blushing. When Wolfram looked on them some girls giggled. He rolled his eyes. Why must people always do that?
"I was thinking." The raven girl said. "You will have to stay in the castle once your pregnancy starts showing. Either that or you'll have to dress up like a girl."
"And why is that?" Wolfram said offended.
The light turned green and they started walking.
"Use logic for a moment. I asked you before if it were possible for you to bear children. Obviously it means that it doesn't happen here. If scientists were to find out about it, they would do anything to have their hands on you and god knows what horrible things they would do to you."
Wolfram gulped. He hadn't thought of that. Scientist reminded him of Anissina. Anything that had to do with that woman was to be considered as dangerous.
"But don't worry, if we dress you up everything will be fine. We just need fake boobs. You already have the looks."
Wolfram glared at her. "I don't appreciate you referring to me as feminine."
Zael shrugged. "Not my fault. I mean you are very beautiful. More than many women I've seen, not to mention the fact that you're pregnant. Which in this world, it's a woman thing only by the way. It's better to accept it than denying it."
Denial he was too familiar with that word. A very double-black familiarly with it.
"As long I don't have to wear any stupid dresses..."
"I definitely agree on that. I don't even like them for myself."
"Actually, when I saw you I thought you were a boy. Even your name sounds more of a guy's name."
The girl pouted a little. "My name can go both ways but it's usually used on boys and yeah, I prefer man clothing. I rarely dress like a girl and I mean a normal one, not the all bows, fluffy crap that Hadrid wants me to wear. He used to let me choose what to wear, but almost died of a heart-attack when I once showed up on a ball wearing a black dress with red laces and a black tiara. He said I looked like a Gothic Lolita."
"Say what?"
"Never mind, he just won't let me be."
The two continue to walk in the city. Stopping every once and a while when Wolfram found something that caught his attention.
The blonde demon, was feeling happy. He had already made friends and he was sure that soon they would be his new family. Hadrid had resembles of a father and he always wondered what it would be like to be the older brother for once.
"Wolfram! What are you doing standing? Let's go!" Wolfram woke from his thoughts and saw Zael waving at him not far away. "You're blocking people's way you know?"
"I'm coming!" he shouted back. His smile widens. The uneasiness that he felt this morning forgotten.
Coming to this world, was the best decision he had ever made.
