Yuuri was lost.
Everyone around school was acting very strange, and he wasn’t stupid. It was about him.
When he would walk by, they would stop talking and stare - or the opposite, start whispering in a huddle, as if he would try and eavesdrop.
Yuuri was used to this from the Mazoku in Shin Makoku, but had never been subjected to it on Earth. Here, he was supposed to be a normal highschooler.
Yuuri passed by yet another group of gossipers and shut himself in the thankfully empty bathroom.
After using the restroom (snorting when he actually considered being sucked down by choice this time), he went to the sink to wash his hands.
Just as he was drying them off, the door opened and Murata slipped in. Yuuri gave him a weak greeting.
“Yo, Shibuya.”
“Yeah…” Yuuri mumbled, debating holing himself up in the bathroom for a while, but decided against it - it’d be his luck that bullies would show up.
“What’s got you down?” Murata asked, leaning against the sink.
“Has everyone seemed…weird to you today?”
‘Oh, that.” Murata waved a hand in front of his face and said easily, “Someone took our picture the other day and printed it in the school paper.”
Yuuri tried to remember what Murata was talking about that was newsworthy. He couldn’t think of anything. They hadn’t been to Shin Makoku in a week, so it couldn’t have been them disappearing in a puddle of water somewhere that got their attention.
Luckily, Murata saw his confusion and deigned to answer.
“When you tripped and fell on me in front of school?”
Suddenly, it clicked.
The other day, Yuuri had been walking down the steps from school. Murata had been waiting at the bottom and talking to him.
Yuuri had been fine until Murata had loosened his tie, and Yuuri had been unexplainably drawn to the action. That’s when he’d tripped and went flying, falling onto the other boy and ending up straddling him. He’d had no idea anyone else had witnessed it.
“T-that? But why would anyone-“
Oh. Oh.
Yuuri realized what people probably thought of the photo of Yuuri straddling the boy he was known for hanging out and disappearing with often.
He recalled that it’d taken him a full thirty seconds to get up, and he’d been red from head to foot.
“Oh.” Yuuri said, not knowing what else to say.
“Don’t worry, I’m sure the rumors will die down eventually.” Murata smiled and patted Yuuri’s shoulder, letting his hand rest there.
“Yeah…” He murmured, taking in the warmth that seeped into his shoulder from Murata’s hand.
“Come on, it’s time for lunch.” Murata let his hand fall, but didn’t take it back - instead, he grabbed Yuuri’s hand and started pulling him to the door.
Yuuri stared down at their connected hands and wondered if Murata knew what he was doing.
Before Murata’s other hand pulled the handle to the door open, he looked over his shoulder at Yuuri.
His expression seemed to ask, “Is this okay?”.
Yuuri didn’t have any other answer except, “yes” as he allowed himself to be pulled along.
