Has there been any sort of official word about how the OVAs fit into the canon of the rest of the anime? It would seem most straightforward that they fit after S2 and before S3, but there seem to be a few issues with that from recent S3 episodes. As well it seems that these issues are sometimes straight contradictions so that it's not even a question of where the OVAs fit but if they even fit at all.
Two things:
- Yuuri meets the new king of Small Shimaron in the OVAs. He meets him in episode 85 of S3. Both times appear to be their first meeting? Unless I've missed something this would suggest that the OVAs simply aren't canon as far as the series is concerned.
- There are smaller issues with Shinou and when people find out about him. Wolfram appears to only just find out that Shinou is still around in episode 84 (maybe 83, can't be bothered to check), despite also finding out in the OVAs. This could be a simple timing thing, and maybe it's just that the OVAs are meant to be taken sidestories that occur in bits of S3 we haven't seen, but the total contradiction of when Yuuri first meets Saralegui can't be resolved by timing alone.
While speculation is interesting I was just wondering whether or not the creators of the show or Muruma or anyone else has commented on this? Are the OVAs just to be taken as largely completely separate and not affecting the main show? Does anyone who knows more about the original novels know how/if the OVAs and S3 storyline are portrayed in the novel?
I hate inconsistent universes. But anime seems to invite them. : /
