My guess is that it would be very difficult for you to get a job, though depending on what your degree is in. The days of anyone being able to be an English teacher are pretty much over. Most places really want people with ESL certifications of some sort. And there are many people applying for every position so the schools can afford to be picky.

Now for expenses, Japan is expensive. If you plan to rent an apartment you need key money an other things that mean you basically need 6 months rent (or more) as a non refundable down payment. Though some places are doing no key money but those are rarer.

I think i would recommend you saving up some money and trying to stay at a guest house for a few months and check the city out.

This is a nice place: http://ebisuskyoto.freeservers.com/index.html
I have stayed there before. it is 43,000 yen a month (about $430) which is really nice. Shared facilities but if you want to go and spend a few months there then that works well. There are many other monthly guest houses in the area also. A web search works pretty well. You would be hard pressed finding an apartment for less, though then you would get private bath. If you have more money to use and maybe a friend who speaks/reads Japanese i would recommend looking into a monthly mansion rental. They will be a bit more, but will have our own bathroom and hotplate for cooking.

Food, if you cook japanese yourself, you can probably get away with $15 a day, if you plan to eat out modestly then $20 is probably better. Of course if you just do noodles it can be cheaper. that ends up being what, about $400 - $600 a month. So I would be wise and plan about $1000 a month living expenses.

Again for work you will may have a hard time, You will need to be qualified enough for the company to want to go through the visa troubles. You could look into a language school to study at and get a student visa.
