Chapter 3

It had been a week since Junsu had seen Yoochun. Well, he actually saw him every day in class but Yoochun always found some way to avoid him. He remembered what his mother said to him and tried to be more open minded and considerate. Or in lamens terms. Stop being such a bastard.

“So you’re saying that this young man keeps running away from you, unless the two of you are doing your project.”

“Yes.”

“Well, honey. You are quite scary sometimes.”

“Mother!”

“See.”

He sighed in frustration hearing his mother laugh.

“Just kidding dear. But maybe you should think of where he is coming from. He’s not from our social status. He’s in a wealthy high class school on a scholarship and from what you say, he’s not exactly the strong looking type. It seems he has a lot of things to deal with.”

“But why does he keep running away from me?”

“Well, I think he’s an introvert. He’s quiet and doesn’t talk too much to people. So socially standing, maybe since he doesn’t have any friends, he doesn’t know how to make them.”

“Doesn’t have friends?”

“Yes, sweetheart. You did say he often gets bullied.”

Junsu nodded in thought.

“I know you have a temper honey, but try to be patient with him ok? It seems he has a lot going on at school. And you don’t even know what he has going on at home.”

Junsu looked at her.

“Home?” She nodded.

“You never know, sweetheart. Not everyone has a perfect life.” She walked over and patted him on the head. “Just be a little more sensitive, ne?”

‘Sensitive, patient. I can do that.’ He thought to himself as he left school and headed home. Since soccer practice had finished early he decided to fill up his car before he went home. As he left the gas station he was surprised when he saw someone familiar walking the streets.

“Yoochun?”

Almost making a 180 in the street he spun his car around and followed the young man. After about ten minutes he saw Yoochun walk into a bar that was in more of the shady areas of town. He parked his car across the street and waited. “I wonder what he’s doing in a place like this?” After five minutes passed, then ten, then twenty, then thirty; He groaned. “What’s taking him so long?” Deciding that waiting in the car wasn’t doing anything, he got out and headed over to the bar. Once he got inside he saw it was dark, smoky and loud. There was a stage where a jazz band played and the floor was scattered with tables full of a mix of people. From old business men to men who looked even shadier. Waiters were bustling about carrying orders and the bar was filled with people. He looked around the room for a familiar face and soon saw him taking and order from a group of shady looking guys. His eyes widened. Yoochun worked here? Taking a seat at the last stool of the crowded bar, he watched as Yoochun wrote down the orders and was shocked as the customers grabbed at Yoochuns hips and thighs as he walked past. He was about to get up when someone spoke to him.

“What can I get for you kid?”

Looking up he saw a guy, was it a guy? with red hair and sharp eyes. Then he realized it was the bartender.

“Oh, a coke.”

“Coming right up.”

A minute later a glass of coke slide by him. He nodded his thanks as the bartender began to clean the counter around him. He continued to stare at Yoochun as he went from table to table taking and dropping off orders. He eyed the customers suspiciously with narrowed eyes as he sipped his drink. Those bastards were eyeing Yoochun with lecherous eyes and unconsciously his grip on the glass tightened. Heechul rose an eyebrow as he dried a glass.

“You know him.”

He snapped his head around and saw it was only the bartender.

“Oh…yeah. We go to the same school.”

“Oh really? I never met any of Mickys friends.”

“Micky? Friends?” He muttered to himself.

“Oh, how rude of me. I didn’t introduce myself. I’m Heechul.” Extending his hand, Junsu took it and gave it a shake.

“Junsu.”

Heechul nodded.

“Umm…so how long has ‘Micky’ been working here?” He would have to ask Yoochun about this other name later.

“A couple of months now. The poor kid. He comes here right after school and works so hard. I tell him he needs to take a break but he doesn’t listen.”

Junsu nodded in thought. “But how come most of your customers are…” He couldn’t find the right words.

“Old, dirty businessmen who really are the underworlds most notorious crime lords?” Junsu blinked.

“…Yeah.”

“Well sweetie, this isn’t exactly the most law abiding part of town.”

“But how come the customers keep…”

“Groping our waiters? Well, here you pretty much see all of those high class businessmen true colors. Did you notice that all our waiters, scratch that; all of our employees are easy on the eyes?” Junsu took a look at Heechul and noticed that he did have a pretty face, and took a look at the rest of the employees. All of them were pretty handsome and good looking. Then he looked at Yoochun. He remembered how he had first mistook him for a girl the first time he saw him and knew that the customers in here pretty much would think the same thing.

“Do you want me to let him know you’re here?”

He was snapped out of his thoughts and looked back to Heechul.

“No.” He shook his head. “I’ll talk to him later.” He nodded and went back to work.

As time ticked away, Junsu remained in his seat and watched Yoochun closely. He had no idea Yoochun had a job. Especially at a place like this. He sighed and continued to watch him.

11:05 p.m.

Junsu followed Yoochun as he said good night to his fellow employees and headed out the door. Since it was so late hardly any cars were on the street and he thought it would be wiser to follow him on foot than by car. After walking a few blocks they finally entered a neighborhood that looked just as shady as the bar. He walked to an apartment and knocked on the door and a few moments later, the door swung open to reveal an old lady. She greeted Yoochun and brought him inside. Junsu wondered if this was where he lived and thought that he should turn back. But before he could take a step the door opened again and Yoochun stepped out with a something wrapped in a white bundle held securely in his arms. He had an extra bag slung on his shoulder and Junsu looked on in wonder, contemplating what was this strange object Yoochun was carrying.

Yoochun then said good night to the old lady and continued to walk down the street. Deciding to get a little bit closer he was surprised when he heard, gurgling? Yoochun began to speak to the object in his hands and it was then that he finally realized what Yoochun was carrying…

A baby?

Yoochun had a kid?

No, he couldn’t believe it. Well, it wasn’t all that impossible…but really. After he followed him to an old beat up duplex, he decided that that was enough spying for one night. All of this new information he gathered about the quiet teen was a bit overwhelming. So Yoochun had a scholarship to their school. He was poor. He worked in a shady bar and he had a kid?

Mulling over his thoughts he turned to lay down in his king sized bed. He never really thought about other people except for those in his social class. Everything was handed to him easily and he never had to work for anything in his life. But seeing Yoochun and how he was struggling to survive, got him thinking. Was he taking everything he had for granted? He thought for a second how would it be like if he were in Yoochuns shoes and vice versa. But then couldn’t stomach the thought. He wouldn’t be able to survive. Not like Yoochun was.

Sighing, he rolled over and decided to get some sleep. Tomorrow he would deal with this.

It was another normal day at school and Junsu was now in the process of hunting down Yoochun. Again. It was lunch time and he was searching high and low for the quiet young man but couldn’t find him. Heading outside into the large open space of the soccer field he decided to try look here too but after a few minutes of finding no one, he was about to give up. It wasn’t until he was passing by the large bleachers he heard some laughing to his left. Deciding to be curious he walked behind the bleachers into the shady coolness provided there. What he saw made his fist clench unconsciously.

There was Yoochun being shoved around by three guys in a circle with his bag clutched to his chest. They were laughing and calling him names and Yoochun could do nothing except bear through it. With four short steps Junsu was behind them and in an instant he turned one of them around and gave him a sharp right hook in the jaw.

“I’m getting really tired of this.” He looked at the small group and at Yoochun who was staring at him with wide eyes. “Don’t you punks have anything better to do than picking on people?”

“What? Hey what’s wrong with you? Get out of our face!” One of the guys shouted as he roughly shoved Junsu in the shoulder. The guy who he had punched had now gotten up and was glaring at him.

“You’ve got a lot of nerve kid.” He said as he spat some blood on the dirt. “Interrupting our play time with our toy.” He said with a grin. Junsu had now walked in front of Yoochun and stood in front of him as the three guys approached them.

“Get him.”

And before he knew it the two guys behind the one with the split lip dashed towards him in an attempt to tackle him. But he was ready. He dodged them easily and with a swift punch to the gut and back, they were knocked to the ground.

“Impressive. Now, my turn.”

The leader came at him so fast this time he didn’t see the fist coming until it connected to his jaw. He stumbled back but regained his balance and attacked with an upper cut that was dodged but a high kick to the head that hit the mark perfectly. He watched as his opponent fell to the ground unconscious then turned around to look for Yoochun. Said boy was staring at him from the corner of the bleachers and he walked over to the quiet young man who looked visibly shaken. Without saying a word he grabbed his hand and dragged him off. And Yoochun let him.

When they reached a part of the school that was surround by trees and flowers Junsu realized he had taken them to the garden. Thinking this was as good a place as any, he slumped down to lean on a large oak tree and turned his head to see Yoochun fiddling his fingers as he stood where he left him. He sighed.

“I won’t bite you know.” He mumbled as he gestured for him to sit next to him. He watched as Yoochun seemed to contemplate with himself before slowly sitting next to him with his bag still clutched to his chest. A few minutes passed in silence until he spoke again. “I’m sorry.”

Yoochun whipped his head to stare at him. Did he hear what he thought he heard?

Junsu slowly turned his head towards him. “What? I-”

“You’re bleeding!”

“What?”

Junsu watched as Yoochun opened his bag and dug around it looking for something. A second later he pulled out a small first aid box and took out a piece of gauze and poured some antiseptic on it. Turning back to him he leaned closer and began to dab his lip which he now knew was split.

“Ouch! That stings!”

Junsu jumped back covering his injured lip protectively.

“I-I’m sorry, but you have to clean it or it will get infected.” Yoochun said softly. Junsu stared at him for a moment before sighing and leaning against the tree again. Yoochun took this as a sign to continue and began to clean his lip again. This time Junsu didn’t flinch but instead stared at Yoochun as he cleaned his wound. Yoochun felt the eyes on him and was beginning to feel uncomfortable so he just focused on his small task.

When he was done he sat back and looked at his work satisfied.

“Finished.”

“Thanks.”

An awkward silence.

“So… how come you have a first aid kit in your bag? I thought this school had a school nurse?” Junsu decided to start some small talk.

Yoochun bit his lip as he put his kit away. “I-I don’t like to bother her.”

“Bother her? But I thought it was her job to help students.”

“It is.” ‘I just don’t want her to get too suspicious, that’s all.’ He thought.

Junsu saw the look on his face and decided to drop the topic.

“Ummmm…so do you-”

“Thank you.”

“Huh?”

“I wanted to say thank you for helping me back there, as well as the times before.” Yoochun said suddenly as he sat up on his knees and bowed his head. Junsu looked at him in surprise.

“Um…y-you don’t have to thank me. I was just…umm…” He didn’t know what to say. He never really helped anybody before and no one had ever had any reason to thank him. Clearing his throat he looked directly into Yoochuns eyes. “Look, I want to apologize for before.” He watched as the young man stared at him in surprise. “I didn’t mean to say those things. I just have a bad temper and get angry easily. My mum says I get it from my father but I think-”

The sound of giggling to his right caused him to look at Yoochun who was holding his hand to his mouth trying to stifle the sound. Unbeknownst to Junsu, a smile etched its way onto his face as he stared at the giggling boy beside him.

“I’m blabbering aren’t I?”

Yoochun shook his head and seemed to relax around the blabbering jock. “Forgiven.” He said quietly. Junsu didn’t know why he suddenly felt better.

“Ah, well I was thinking that we should start over. I mean so we can get our project done but not only that. I mean…I’m doing it again aren’t I?” Junsu stuck out his hand. “Hi, I’m Kim Junsu.” Yoochun stared at the hand offered to him for a moment then at the young man who was offering it. He placed his hand in the larger one and spoke softly with the smallest smile on his face.

“Park Yoochun.
