007 The year of Fries

Dec 31, 2007 20:14

I have nearly done it.....as of 12:00 AM EST, I will have gone 365 days without consuming a single ounce of fried potato stick. Now some of you might think that's not difficult....but believe me it is. Nearly every fast food combination in our trendy American lifestyle equates to a certain portion of overtly fried potato goodness....err not goodness, but fat....but even so they can be awfully tasty..and salty...and...fry shaped.

I plan on eating at least one serving of fries tomorrow in celebration of a year without them. I'm sure health wise I'm much better off never consuming any more fries in my lifetime. However I don't believe that I'll suddenly go around wolfing down fries everyday.

Everything in moderation, so I'm expecting to eat one portion of fries every other week at most...still that seems too much. I guess time will tell, I might eat those fries tomorrow and realize they are actually nasty. Perhaps I will find that the only reason we as a society eat so much of them, is because we are trained from an early age by our overtly pushy fast food industry. Or perhaps I'll eat them and say...hey these are good but I know they are reallllly bad for me. Perhaps once every now and then is just a good motto. Most of us do this unconsiously with things like sweets anyway, how hard can it be to apply it to fatty foods. (Even if they are pushed at us with every fast food purchase.)

In the 80's it was "Would you like fries with that." Overly salty potato confection = more drink sales. Coke and Pepsi who sponser many fast food chains want to sell more sugar water etc etc. It was in the 90's when we realized the oil these things are cooked in is actually terribly bad for you. Ironically even after the chain restaurants changed to a "Zero transfat" oil, they changed it back because their fry sales went down. They just didn't taste as good. Some fast food chains (the most commonly eaten food in America) do provide alternatives now. However the biggest and most child friendly, "Mc'Ds" still does not.

As a continuation on my last New Years Resolution, I'm going to try something a little more diffucult for 008. I will be attempting to swear off all Carbonated beverages for the next 365 days.

Have a Happy New Year everyone!!
