Weed All About It
The legalization of marijuana has historically been a highly debated topic for many years now and for many years to come. Once a legal activity, many Americans supported and indulged in the smoking of marijuana. Nowadays, it is frowned upon and it is an illegal activity. However, if marijuana was once again legal, many benefits would arise from this. Economic advantages can come from the legalization of marijuana. Also, marijuana can be used for many illnesses and it can relieve pain from some illnesses. So it has many health benefits. Marijuana also has many non-drug related uses if it were legalized. Although there are many positive benefits from the legalization of marijuana, there are also disadvantages. Legalizing marijuana would lead to more people using it which can lead to the abuse of it. This can lead to negative long term health risks. These topics will be discussed in detail throughout this paper.
The legalization of marijuana has an abundance of economic advantages. One economic advantage is that if marijuana is legalized the United States government will have the right to tax it just like every other product or service that is provided in this country. For example, all one has to do is look at the taxing that has evolved on cigarettes. In Massachusetts, the state tax rate on cigarettes is 151 cents per every pack sold (Taxadmin.Org). If marijuana was legalized, the government could average out the taxes like they do with cigarettes. This extra money could be used for many useful benefits related to health. For example, in California last year, Proposition 86 was on the ballot. This ballot wanted to raise the tax on cigarettes by $2.60. This money would be allocated between children’s medical programs, health treatment services, and better funding for education in our schools. (Proposition 86). This same tax model could be used on marijuana if it were legalized. Also, the tax from the sale of marijuana could be used for state and town programs. It may provide needed money to fix school buildings that are sub-par or enable schools to build additions so to alleviate overcrowded classrooms. The economic benefits that come from the taxing of the sale of marijuana could be endless.
The economic downfall of legalizing marijuana would be that if cannabis was sold everywhere it might actually decrease the profit and price. This may lead to less money received in taxes by the government because the world is a supply and demand market. This might also lead to more people selling it on the street because there is no fear in selling something that’s legal, and just like anything it would decrease the value because there’s more competition.
The legalization of marijuana also has many health benefits. There are many AIDS patients in the world today that suffer with nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. If marijuana was legalized it would help with the side affects caused by AIDS and the medication itself.
Marijuana can reduce Glaucoma’s interlobular pressure and reduce the pain, and slowing the progress of the condition. Marijuana can stimulate the appetite and decrease nausea and vomiting, which are common side effects of chemotherapy treatment for the terminally ill cancer patients. Marijuana can limit the muscle pain and spasms caused by the disease of Multiple Sclerosis, as well as relieving tremor and unsteadiness of gait. Marijuana can prevent epileptic seizures in some patients who suffer from Epilepsy. Marijuana can alleviate the chronic, often debilitating pain caused by myriad disorders and injuries. (Medicinal Benefits.)
Marijuana helps with stress and anxiety. If cannabis was legal people would be less stressed, which is the main factor to anxiety. Which means less medication would have to be taken. Also no one has ever over dosed from the smoking of cannabis and it is not addictive like most prescription pain medications prescribed today by most doctors.
With most medications for reducing pain grows weak because your body becomes tolerant to it so doctors are continuously increasing the doses. So therefore marijuana is safer for your body because there is no addiction.
The only downside to this is the long term affects of marijuana, like cigarettes, it has a risk of lung cancer. Despite the fact that cannabis relaxes is you, it might have an affect on your concentration and short term memory.
The legalization of marijuana also subjects to many non-drug related commercial uses. For example, paper products, if researchers could grow hemp plants we could make paper products from that instead of cutting down our oxygen and thus saving our trees. A Hemp Industries Association fact sheet reports that "hemp produces more pulp per acre than timber on a sustainable basis, and can be used for every quality of paper. Fewer caustic and toxic chemicals are used to make paper from hemp than are used to make paper from trees, which means less pollution. (Nix, Steve). Linking back to our economical resources, if hemp plants were legal we could tax more on our paper products which again is essential to our economy.
