Recs of Things Necessary to Understand Pop Culture More Fully/People Quote These All the Time: *Monty Python and the Holy Grail (classic) *The Princess Bride (classic) *Zoolander (hilarious) *Ghostbusters
My Personal Favourites: *Amazing Grace (no one has seen this; it's a movie about the guy who first tried to get slavery abolished in England and it is a FANTASTIC FILM) *The Godfather (it's violent--although not very bloody, for a violent film--but they don't call it a masterpiece for nothing. This movie is gold.) *Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (hysterical) *Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (funny and targeted at people who play video games; I also recommend the comics) *Zombieland (I thought this would be a dumb movie but it's actually really funny) *Mean Girls (Just. So funny. The entire time. The screenplay was by Tina Fey, if that tells you anything.)
Thanks for the recs! I've seen Monty Python, Scott Pilgrim, The Princess Bride, and Zombieland, but not the others. (I didn't like The Princess Bride, actually. I'm probably the only person on the planet who didn't, but a lot of the humor seemed to go over my head.)
I'm a bit ashamed to say that I haven't seen The Godfather, mostly because the classic "mob accent" is one of my pet peeves and I wasn't sure I could sit through an hour and a half of that without throwing something through the TV screen. XD But I might try to watch it now that I can rent a copy for free.
Violence doesn't bother me, btw. I just don't like watching gory films where people get dismembered in the most gruesome ways possible for the "shock" factor.
I'd recommend it, especially if it's free! It helps that the accents are often authentic; once you get over the whole premise of "oooooooh yes I see everyone's Italian" it becomes very natural IMO. They're more "New York" than "mobster" anyway (for example, nobody says "see?" the entire movie :P).
Also duuuude I hate those films too. The gore itself doesn't bother me, but I think it's a cheap tactic to get an emotional response.
Hnnnnnnnng Black City/White treehollow. DON'T EVEN. I'm currently in the process of going through it now to get my shiny 'tini, and blarrrrgh. It's just so...meh.I'm not into dungeon crawls, I guess. I really want that shiny Haxorus too, but without another DS I'll never get to it :/
Okay, movie recs! *Hot Fuzz - hilarious and awesome. Does have one really "gory" scene in it, but it's so ridiculous and over-the-top that...it's just kinda dumb? Which is the point? But just a heads up. * The Prestige - if you haven't seen it already. Christian Bale/Hugh Jackman are competing magicians. Very cool. * Equilibrium * The Frighteners * The Summer Wars * The Girl Who Leapt Through Time ...I'd also suggest chasing down any Ghibli films you haven't seen yet(if any)? Always a good investment. Except maybe Grave of the Fireflies. Baaaww.
You *could* also rent out series while you're there. Maybe Star Trek, if you haven't seen any?
I had forgotten about shiny Haxorus. If you have Wifi, I could help you fill your Pokedex. I don't have every Pokemon, but my Pokedex on my original Black version is near complete. (The ones I'm missing are the evolutions that I did not want to waste items on.)
I'm fine with dungeon crawls but not when the maze changes every time. It doesn't help that it took me forever to realize that levels 6+ have multiple floors. I don't know how many times I quit level 6 because I couldn't find either the gate trainer or the boss trainer on the same level

Alas, no wi-fi for me either. My house's epic insulation means we get no reception inside the house, so even if we did it would be limited to the kitchen, derp. I'm thinking of either getting a small wi-fi USB for my PC or just picking up a 2nd DS lite cheap (like, $50 cheap). Or waiting until I get a 3DS XL, which will be...eventually (gotta play prof Layton, right?)Thanks for the offer, though!
I actually remembered 3 more films you should see - Blazing Saddles, Robin Hood: Men in Tights and Spaceballs. They're all by Mel Brooks, and Blazing Saddles is considered something of a comedy classic. Castle in the Sky is also pretty good, and worth finding, if you can! Tales from Earthsea....meh. It's definitely lacking, hasn't the strong characters and well-paced story you expect from a Ghibli film. Watch it, sure, but Laputa over Earthsea, if you get the choice.
Oh man, that sucks. I had no wifi on my DS for the four years I was in college (due to my school's security settings on their network) so I feel for you there.
I saw a few minutes of Robin Hood: Men in Tights on TV the other night and was disappointed that I didn't get to watch the whole thing.
We don't have any way to record TV shows, anyway. Unless I happen to be watching TV when the show starts AND have 3 hours of free time to watch the entire thing, I don't watch movies on TV.
(um, took the liberty of friending you a while ago, hope you don't mind!)
Not quite sure what type of movies you're into, but off the top of my head I'd recommend The Truman Show (drama?) and The Sky Crawlers (animated sci-fi/drama). Oh, and The Other Guys (comedy).
I don't mind... but I also didn't notice because I don't always get notifications when people friend me. (Fair warning that my journal contains lots of whining, especially in the winter. I hate this season.)
I'm not sure what type of movies I'm into either, to be honest. I love animated movies, but live action is really hit and miss for me. I gravitate towards fantasty/sci-fi when it comes to books, but I've seen too many sci-fi movies where the special effects or the acting (or both) felt forced and I could not suspend my disbelief.
I really enjoyed the new pony episodes, too! Yes, the jousting armor was great! I liked the whole idea of the Crystal Empire, too. And IDK who was ruling it? I'm going to rewatch and hopefully catch some more of the details tomorrow. ^^; Sombra's design was cool, though he didn't end up being as difficult to defeat as expected. XD
( ... )
phoenixxfoxx pointed out that Cadence apparently rules it. At least, if the text on the back of one of the Hasbro toy packages is to be believed. As for Sombra, I feel like that episode would have benefited from 10 more minutes, or maybe even 5 more minutes. Then the fight with Sombra wouldn't have to be cut so short.
Actually, I also own a copy of White 2, so I'll be getting my own shiny Dratini. (I just haven't gotten around to it yet.) Sorry. D:
I've seen Slumdog Millionaire, Pan's Labyrinth (which went completely over my head), Millenium Actress, a few episodes of Paranoia Agent, and Tokyo Godfathers (a long, long time ago; thanks for reminding me to rewatch it).
I'm surprised to hear that Where the Wild Things Are is good. I owned the book as a kid, but I didn't bother to see the movie because I thought "how can they turn this into a 90 minute film?"
Hmm, that's interesting! They did mention it once, but after that it seemed like it was never mentioned again. I agree, I think the episode would have been better if given a few more minutes, but oh well!
That's okay! I'm sure there will be someone who wants to swap. I already have an EV-trained, legit shiny Dragonite, but I haven't trained a Garchomp yet so I might as well make it a shiny!
I'm glad you've seen a lot of them! Watch what you haven't, though. :D Tokyo Godfathers is a perfect movie to watch for Christmas.
I love Where the Wild Things Are to the extent that I bought it, though it makes me so uncomfortable I almost don't want to watch it again. As weird as it sounds, that's in a good way, though, because it got to me so much emotionally. I think you'd really understand it, too--it's about the difficulty with interacting with people, basically, and for some reason it hit a raw nerve with me and I love it for that.
You're welcome! Let me know what you think if you watch anything!
