Failing at everything

My blue nail polish from almost two weeks ago showed no signs of coming off, so I decided it was time to take matters into my own hands. I bought some acetone-free nail polish remover at Target. Bad idea. Worst idea I've had all month, probably.

I had to stop within 20 seconds because the fumes started burning my throat and it was getting a bit hard to breathe. To make matters worse, the nail polish remover barely even worked. It took off the clear top coat on a few of my nails, but not the polish itself.

I managed to get some of the nail polish off by peeling it under very hot water, but the closer I got towards the tips, the harder it was to peel. And after a while the water got too hot for me to handle; I'm a wimp. So now my nails are stuck like this:

Any tips on how to get the rest off WITHOUT using nail polish remover? I haven't tried the stuff with acetone, but I imagine my reaction to that wouldn't be any better. I wish I could remember how I handled this when I was a kid. I seem to recall using some type of nail polish remover, but maybe my reaction to the fumes wasn't as bad. (I know that cleaning products give me much worse reactions than they used to. I can't even walk down the cleaning product isle at Walmart without feeling like I'm dying.)

Also, any tips on how to make the nail polish easier to come off in the future? Will putting a clear base coat underneath and/or not putting on a top coat make it come off more easily? As much as I like painting my nails, it's not worth the hassle if it's going to take me days just to get the nail polish off.

And Callie just decided to throw up while walking. Now there is cat barf all over the dining room floor. Some of it even got on one of her toys. Cleaning that up sure will be fun. Thanks, Callie.

Today is just not my day...
