Canon 50mm f1.8 fix

Mar 29, 2012 22:00

Canon 50 mm f1.8 lens is very attractive because of the price (~$100), but it's very fragile. One of the most common damages is a breakage of a hook which connects rear (lower) and front (upper) blocks of lenses. The consequence of that damage is a malfunctioning manual and autofocus, in other words lens doesn't focus at all. If you bring you lens to official canon service center they can charge you up to the half of the lens original price, like it was in my case. But as it turned out it's not difficult to fix lens yourself. Here is the guide:

1. Remove two screws at the bottom of the lens

2. Push down metallic terminal part..

3. ..and take off the cover by putting screwdriver in a place where terminal part was before

4. Then you can take off the side cover which is attached to the lens by double-sided sticky tape.

Don't worry about the tape=)

5. Take off a screw which you find under the side cover

6. Turn the focus ring and disconnect the "inner" block from the "outer" tube. Let's see what we've got:

7. Now we have to take apart rear and front blocks of lenses

8. This is one of the hooks which is usually broken:

How to fix it? Just make the similar hook out of piece of can, for example, and glue it to the base of the broken one.

I'm too lazy, so I made it for the only one side of the broken hook, but if you've got more patience, you can glue patches on even hook, including those which are not broken (for reliability).

Reassemble everything and enjoy=)
