I have just happened across
this story (couple of months old, sorry), and reading not just the story, but also the comment from Liam Burns, the president of NUS Scotland, has left me quite literally open-mouthed with disbelief.
To talk about universities as tools purely of social mobility rather than as centres of learning is just wrong and stupid. The whole point of a degree is to mark out the person with that degree as being better educated and, dare I say it, more intelligent than someone who doesn't. If you promote this sort of equality, then you intrinsically devalue what you are equalising - if everyone's got one, then there's no point having one.
If this particular moron is the shape of things to come, then I want no fucking part of it.
