I just got back from the SCBWI conference in Los Angeles and I've got the scoop on the hottest info around--EDITOR PREFERENCES!
Gretchen Hirsch / Harper Collins - Spunky, pretty, and cool, Gretchen is a girlie-girl with tattoos--one which reads, "Daddy's Girl." How awesome is that? Gretchen loves YA paranormal stories and smart, sexy chick lit. She pines for literary books that are satisfying page-turners to boot. Also has a craving a YA series and non-fiction picture books. Oh, and books with dogs.
Amalia Ellison / Abrams - Young and pretty, which was a common thread amongst this amazing panel led by Krista Marino, Amalia was the youngest member of the group. She said she dittoed Gretchen's choice of YA paranormal but loves anything that is "really good," which she described as finely crafted and plotted. Her favorite books she wished she had edited were Holes (Louis Sachar), Twilight (Stephenie Meyer), and Goose Girl (Shannon Hale), which I would assume points to her preferences in a significant way.
Namrata Tripathi / Hyperion - Namrata described herself as analytical and nurturing, saying she would describe the books she most enjoys as eclectic and literary. She wants young YA historical fiction/ humorous parodies/ and all levels of fiction and non-fiction with unique voices and diverse characters. She loves when a book is heartwarming and leaves readers with something to think about.
Nancy Conescu / Little, Brown - Nancy is passionate about books and warmly articulate, describing what she wants in any book at any level as being "ultimately hopeful." She wants books with fabulous voices because that's an area that's difficult to fix. She's looking for a strong chapter book series for boys along the lines of Fancy Nancy, as well as a recent hankering for a YA cult book. She was super excited to tell us about a book she recently edited called This is What I Did by Ann Dee Ellis, especially because it's a non-traditional format that she particularly enjoys.
