Oh oh oh. Funny old people Easter tale.
My mom is the director of an assisted living place in West DM, for a chain that tends to take people with more dementia than most assisted living places will. Even the ones who aren't bat-shit crazy are old and a little foggy. There's this one tiny little lady, Adeline, who's 94 and looks exactly like the rapping granny from The Wedding Singer. She was a famous ballet dancer when she was young, and she's the cutest thing in the world in her housecoat and pearls. Every time I come in she forgets she's met me and tells my mom what a lovely daughter she has.
Anyway, I went up there with my mom on Saturday because the families had been invited in for lunch and egg-dyeing. We helped the staff serve lunch and then started to mix up the dyes and take them around to the tables. As we're clearing off the table, my mom asks Adeline if she'd like another cup of coffee, and she says she would. My mom goes away to get it but gets distracted along the way, and as I'm standing there setting up their table I hear one of the other residents say "oh honey don't drink that!" I look down and Adeline is staring at two styrofoam cups of dye, one purple and one blue, and looking entirely bewildered. She looks up at me, sitting the blue cup down, and says, "I didn't want either one of these, I wanted something hot." I try not to look horrified or crack up and say loudly and gently, "Oh no, this is your egg dye. Your coffee is on the way." And the really funny part is, she did it at least twice more.
Crazy old people drinking blue dye are funny.
