Ok, Facebook is REALLY pissing me off today. I tried to post this as a note but apparently it has things that "some Facebook users find offensive" or some stupid crap like that. So I'm just going to post it here, and then post a link on my Facebook.
*********************************************************************************************
Apparently everything thinks I'm THE authority on good fanfiction, so I've been asked to slap together a list of some of my favorites. I'll give a short review of each so that you know what each is about before you read them.
I'm also going to cross-post these review posts to the XF Fanfic group, per Victoria's request :)
Everything here is available at Gossamer unless otherwise noted.
"Sweet Nothings For The Numb" by Amal Nahurriyeh (available at
http://amalnahurriyeh.livejournal.com/25216.html) - One thing that always bothered me about the Emily/Christmas Carol arc is that you never really got to see how the events impacted Scully. Finding and losing your daughter all within the space of a few days would be a HUGE emotional blow, especially since Scully had just found out that she was infertile. This fic takes place immediately following Emily's funeral, and explores the terrible emotions that Scully had to deal with. Its extremely angsty, so if you're a fan of angst, definitely give it a try.
"Equal and Opposite" by Flynn - Post-Je Souhate, takes place during and immediately following the end scene in Mulder's apartment. Its beautifully written (as are all of Flynn's fics). Its a Mulder POV, starts with searching for the remote in the couch cushions and moves on to...other stuff. ;)
"Samson" by Aloysia Virgata (available at
http://aloysiavirgata.livejournal.com/28794.html) - This is a Diana Fowley character study. I know, I know, EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW FOWLEY - but WAIT! This is actually really good, and adds some depth to the character. A lot of people have said that they don't dislike Diana because she was competition for Scully, but because she was badly-used, badly-casted, and to quote Aloysia - "I think it cheapens the relationship Mulder and Scully have when characters like Fowley and Whitney serve only to promote cattiness." This story makes Diana into a more three-dimensional character and is very well-written.
"The Common Fate Of All Things Rare" by Aloysia Virgata and Scarlet Baldy - I think just about EVERYONE has already read this one. Its a casefile set in Baltimore about a killer who keeps cutting out women's hearts. It takes place right before Memento Mori, Scully doesn't yet know she has cancer, but is having all the symptoms (the extreme headaches and nosebleeds). Its a really well-written casefile (which is rare - I'm really pick about casefile fics), and has possibly the coolest and funniest original character ever - Detective Wickham, which I REALLY hope one of these writers uses in a future fic!
"Selfish" by Adrienne - I'm not even going to review this one. You all know what Adrienne's fic is about. This one is pretty awesome.
"Artificial Starlight" by Annie Sewell-Jennings - Mulder and Scully go out for Italian. I know, it sounds stupid, but Annie is by far my favorite fic writer, and this is BEAUTIFULLY written. She's one of the only writers who can take a kiss in a restaraunt and make it so damn SEXY! Just...wow. Great fic, definitely highly-recced.
"Enough" by Annie Sewell-Jennings - Yes, I'm going to be reccing a lot of Annie in this post, because she's an amazing writer. She is the ONLY writer who has been able to bring me to tears on several occasions. This is one of those fics - it takes place during Redux II (cancer-arc fic - you KNOW that guarantees tears). Its so sad and angsty, and I cried most of the way through it...but don't let that stop you from reading it! The end is a great turnaround, and is actually happy. This is probably my favorite fic that I've read over the past week.
"Erosion" by Annie Sewell-Jennings - This has been, to date, the ONLY fic that I cannot reread. Not because it sucks, but because its so sad that it not only brought me to tears, but to outright sobs. Don't let that stop you from reading, though. Its absolutely AMAZING. It starts off with THEM giving Mulder and Scully an ultimatum - never see each other again, or we're going to kill your families. So every two or three years (I can't remember the time span) they're able to sneak away to a beach house in North Carolina to see each other. This fic spans many, many years. All I can say to this one is - WOW. You have to read it at least once.
"Wearing Icicles" by Annie Sewell-Jennings - Very sweet, takes place during the Christmas before Millenium. This is probably the least-angsty thing Annie has ever written, and is really awesome. Scully is spending Christmas in Colorado with her family and has a really sweet conversation with Mulder on the phone at midnight.
"Skin" by Annie Sewell-Jennings (not available on Gossamer - go to
http://x-files.bytewright.com/arcSk/Skin.html) - Alternate universe story. This was recced to me by Jerbs, who is also picky like me when it comes to fanfic, and is WONDERFUL. What if there was an alternate universe where Mulder never left the VCU and Scully lived in South Carolina as the city's coroner? What if their "other lives" in the "other universe" started coming back to them in dreams? This is a REALLY long fic - 37 chapters - but I stayed up all night just to finish it.
"Smile, Scully" (doesn't really have an author, per se - its a community on Livejournal. Go to
http://community.livejournal.com/smilescully) - This was a project by someone on Livejournal a while back. Its a series of short vignettes where each story centers around a photograph, or taking a photograph. There's 18 short stories in the series - just scroll to the bottom of the page to start at 1 and work your way up.
"9 Days in February" by various authors (go to
http://fic.atspace.com/fic/valentines/hearts-map.html) - This is also a project done by several authors. Each story centers around one Valentine's Day - one for each year of Mulder and Scully's partnership - and explores the evolution of their relationship. The last year has two stories - two different ideas of how Mulder and Scully might have been reunited for Valentine's Day the year that Mulder was on the run. Every last story is well-written, and definitely worth a look.
"Water's Edge" by Elizabeth Rowandale (available at
http://rowan_d.tripod.com/watersedge.html) - Ok, I'll admit it - I really, REALLY dislike most Mulder/Other and Scully/Other stories. But this one is GREAT, and it DOES have MSR - just read the whole story! It starts out with Mulder going undercover and being reported as dead. Scully turns to her old flame Daniel Waterston to ease the pain. Its long, but extremely well-written. Most of it IS Scully/Daniel, but give it a chance because its really great. There's also a sequel called "High Tide" which I believe is unfinished that is MSR.
Ok I'll end this post for now, because its getting long. More later!
