SIGNS
Life had been dull for Akanishi Jin ever since he landed a job in Tokyo. The usual cheery aura he had vanished and was replaced with this stoic personality he did not know he even possessed. His passion to play the guitar, compose love songs and even play soccer was overpowered by the tons of paper work he brought home every single day. Weekends included.
“You look like an old man, Bakanishi!” Tanaka Koki guffawed as he stuffed himself with the cakes Ueda Tatsuya had prepared.
“Koki’s right you know? You look older than your age Jin,” Ueda spoke behind the magazine he was reading.
“Blame Nakamaru for letting me work in this weird company,” Jin replied gnawing the head of the pencil as he continued punching numbers in his calculator.
“You’re blaming Yuichi? Thanks to him you got a job, Jin or else you’ll be a beggar asking for alms in the streets of Chiba,” Ueda glared at him.
“And so now we’re fighting? What’s wrong with you guys?” Jin stood up from his chair, his right hand curled into a fist.
“Dude, loosen up will ya? We just miss the old Jin.” Koki pointedly stared at him.
“HAH? I’m still the old Jin.”
“No you aren’t. The old Jin knows how to juggle his social life and work. The person we’re talking to now does not even give a fuck we’re here in his apartment.” Ueda walked towards Koki and dragged him to the door.
“What are y - ?” Jin countered but was cut off by Ueda’s soft whisper followed by the loud slam of the door.
“Please bring back the old Jin to us.”
~*~
Every day was a routine for him - getting up at 7:00 AM, grabbing coffee and a meat bun from a nearby coffee shop and jogging towards his office. Clad in business attire, Akanishi sat on his office chair and started typing away on his laptop.
“Ano, Akanishi-san? Johnny-sama wants to see you in his office,” a sweet and melodic voice rang in his ears.
“Oh. Thank you, Faith-san,” he replied with a smile that got his officemate blushing deep red.
“Ah, no problem.” The girl smiled shyly before proceeding to her own cubicle.
Dusting his suit and fixing his tie, Akanishi checked his reflection on his window when he spotted a guy, probably a few years younger than him, on the next door building.
The guy had a smile on his face as he continued rearranging thick books and a laptop on his desk, his hips swaying to an unknown song that was being blasted by his earphones. The stranger felt someone was looking at him and turned his attention to the window where he met Akanishi’s stare.
Akanishi did not know what to do and just continued staring at the man, who was now holding a piece of paper that says, “Hi!”
Eh? What is he doing? Jin thought, his right brow raising. He was about to reply to the stranger when he heard a cough that brought him back to reality.
“Akanishi-kun. I have been waiting in my office.” Johnny Kitagawa just stared amusedly at him before leading the way to his sanctuary.
“A-ah. I’m sorry about that.” He bowed his head and followed the old man, not sparing another glance towards the friendly guy next door.
~*~“Jiii~n! Please produce ten copies of this please?” Yamapi sing-songed as he trailed behind Jin on his way back to the cubicle.
“Go do it yourself, Pi.” Jin stared at him.
“Pretty please?” Pi pouted.
“Fine. You owe me big time.” Jin collected the documents from his officemate and placed it on his desk.
“Thank you!” Pi blew a kiss and sauntered back to his space. Jin’s face cringed in disgust and upon noticing that he was alone, he immediately looked out of his window.
Jin and his officemate sitting on a tree... was the sign being held by Kamenashi Kazuya, the friendly guy as Jin used to call him. Kame works in the next door famous clothing line owned by Kimura Takuya. It took him about three weeks before he got Jin’s attention and willingness to reply to his paper messages.
Ew. That’s disgusting, Kame. How was your day? Jin shoved a piece of paper onto the window as fast as he could which earned a chuckle from the other man.
I wonder how his laugh sounds like Jin thought, a smile making its way on his face.
You look great when you smile, Jin :D was the response he got from Kame. Jin froze on his spot as he felt a warm feeling in his system.
Oi! Jin! Are you okay? Kame frowned seeing the other standing still from his place. Jin noticed it and frantically searched for another paper and messily scribbled his answer.
I’m okay. Work’s been bitchy on me again Jin sighed as he raised his response which earned a smirk from Kame.
How about I help you relax? Kame’s eyes glittered in mischief. Jin smirked and was about to reply when...
“Jiii~n! Where are the documents?” Pi’s squeaky voice echoed the office walls.
What the fuck, Pi? Why can’t you wait? Jin grunted, gathered the documents on his desk and left for the photocopying machine.
“I’ll be right back!” he mouthed to Kame who just nodded.
~*~The screeching sound of the photocopying machine was the only thing heard in the office.
Damn it. I haven’t responded to Kame’s question yet. Jin thought and stared back at the window.
Kame, this time was busy typing on his laptop, and sensing Jin’s stare, raised another piece of paper.
:D Kame smiled.
Jin drew a wacky face on a scratch paper and was about to raise it when a gust of wind entered the room, and sent all the paper he was handling to the floor. Picking them up, he clumsily arranged the documents and placed them on the tray.
He placed the paper on his face and started a goofy dance. Lowering it down, he noticed Kame’s questioning look that made him check the paper he was holding. Jin’s eyes widened and he gasped seeing the front page of the document he should be photocopying. He slowly glanced at the machine and saw his drawing all piled up. He immediately pressed the cancel button and scooped the copies on his arms.
One look at Kame, who was laughing so hard and clutching his stomach, was all it took for Jin to sigh happily and laugh at his mistake as well.
~*~A month had passed and Jin would always wake up with a smile, and his life felt warmer and more colorful. He would greet the people he met, schedule meet-ups with Koki and Ueda and even whole heartedly help Pi in his tasks.
“What has gotten into Jin?” Pi whispered to Nishikido Ryo.
“So you noticed that too? I thought I was only having hallucinations.” Ryo smirked and looked at Jin, who was busy taking down notes.
“Come on, Ryo, what do you think happened to him?” Pi hissed as he kicked his friend’s leg under the conference room table.
“I have no idea. Maybe he’s in love?” Ryo kicked Pi who was about to comment when Jin’s laugh interrupted the meeting.
“Did I say something funny, Akanishi-kun?” Johnny asked as he impatiently tapped his pen on the table.
“A-ah. There’s nothing sir. I’m sorry.” Jin lowered his head and earned snickers from Pi and Ryo.
“He is definitely in love, Ryo.” Pi chuckled and pointed to Jin who was longingly staring at the window, a piece of paper dangling in his hand that said, “Wanna meet up?”
~*~More days passed by and the men grew closer to each other. Neither knew how it happened. Everything just fell right into place since the day Kame confessed what was going on in his mind.
Jin, I have something to tell you. Kame raised the paper and bit on his lower lip.
What is it? Jin asked, his stomach having those silly butterflies and his heart beating rapidly on what was about to come.
Should I be scared or excited? What’s this feeling? Jin thought as he patiently waited for Kame to reply.
I’ve been watching and admiring you from a far. Kame lowered his head as he fought the blush making its way on his cheeks.
Jin stared for a moment as his heart refused to slow down and cooperate with him. His mind was fuzzy and he felt light.
What am I feeling? Is this what they call, love? His body grew warm at that thought.
“I’m in love with him.” He slowly whispered to himself and grinned lopsidedly.
Jin wanted to burst and shout to the whole world that he is in love with Kame, but he knew he just can’t do that all of a sudden. He then remembered the message he wanted to tell Kame before.
Rummaging through his files, he searched for the piece of paper.
“Here it is!” he screamed, earning a few questioning stares from his officemates.
“Sorry.” He lowered his head and contemplated for a while if he should show the paper. The bold letters of “Wanna meet up?” were glaring at him.
Yosh. Let’s do this! Jin huffed and raised the paper when he noticed Kame was busy talking to an unknown guy. It looked like they were about to head somewhere as Kame stood up, spared a glance at Jin who immediately hid the paper.
“I’ve got to go.” Kame signalled and disappeared behind the wooden door.
Jin could only look back and forth from the paper to the window until he decided to return the paper on his case.
~*~“Why is this happening to me?” Jin growled in frustration as he stared at the mirror. Tears flowed freely down his cheeks.
“I should have asked him out! I should have!” He held onto the sink tightly until his knuckles turned white.
But you were scared of rejection, right, Jin? His inner thoughts voiced out his fears. His shoulders trembled and his body crashed onto the bathroom floor.
“Jin? Are you in here?” Pi’s voice entered the bathroom. Jin remained silent until Pi found him all curled up near the sink.
“JIN! Are you okay? What’s wrong?” Pi hugged him tight and stroked his back just like a mother would do to her crying child.
“He’s gone.” Jin murmured and stifled a bitter laugh.
“Who are you talking about?” Pi raised Jin’s head.
“Kame. Kame’s gone!” Jin sighed and clung onto Pi as his memories of that day flashed through his mind.
Jin just arrived at work with the newly found confidence to ask Kame for a meet up. He skipped breakfast and made his way to the office. Instead of using the elevator, he rushed up the stairs and almost bumped into Ryo at the hallways.
“Oi! Watch where you are going, Bakanishi!” Ryo yelled.
Jin just ignored him and jogged to his cubicle. Fishing the paper out of his case, he proceeded to look outside the window.
What he did not expect was another person, unpacking two big brown boxes. The guy was taller than Kame and had an annoying smile on his face. He felt someone looking at him so he raised his head to meet Jin’s inquisitive stare.
He is not Kame! Where is Kame?! Jin frantically thought. Scary scenarios flooded his mind.
Jin started panicking and knocking on the window to get the attention of the stranger. Hushed sounds coming from his officemates told him to stop what he was doing.
Ignoring them, he left the office and started searching the streets. His efforts to search for Kame were put to waste. He sadly walked back to his building, his hope to find Kame was crushed.
“Maybe he just transferred or got promoted?” Pi’s voice brought him back to reality. Jin remained silent, his sobs dying down. “Have you asked the guard of the building?” Pi added, his voice almost depicting humor.
Jin just shook his head.
“There you go. I’ll try asking my connections as to where your Kame might have been to.” Pi patted his back and motioned Jin to stand up.
“Thanks, Pi.” Jin finally answered his voice hoarse and his eyes were swelling.
“That’s what friends are for right?” Pi chuckled and dragged Jin out of the bathroom.
~*~It had been three weeks and Jin still has not found Kame. His life was back to normal. Isolating himself from everyone, the gloomy aura was back in its place, and he looked more stressed than before.
“Jin, why don’t you rest for awhile?” Pi worriedly asked his officemate.
“I’m okay, Pi. You know how I do not want to waste time right?” Jin muttered as he continued typing the data on his laptop.
“Jin, I’m serious. Besides, I have something to tell you.”
“You sure love distracting me, Pi. What is it? I’m listening to you.” More typing sounds were heard.
“I’ve found Kame.”
One simple phrase struck Jin hard. He froze on his seat and the world seemed like closing in on him.
“Jin? Are you listening to me? Jin?” Pi shook him hard.
“A-ah. I’ve heard you. Where is he, Pi?” Jin whispered as he stared at the office floor.
“He just transferred to another room that could be viewed from my cubicle.” Pi grinned and made his famous, “Kon-kon” sign.
“Let’s switch cubicles.” Jin said, as he grasped Pi’s shoulders.
“Go and transfer now. Your things are waiting for you at your new cubicle.”
Jin was shocked at Pi’s immediate compliance. For the first time, he looked at his surroundings and noticed that his file case, mug and other documents were gone. His desk was now filled with Pi’s things, from the KAT-TUN poster to his pink Vaio notebook.
“When did you transfer my things?”
“Oh? Just awhile ago. Bakanishi was too busy and engrossed with his work to notice.”
“Thank you so much Pi! You’re the best.” Jin grinned.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever.” Pi smiled.
~*~
I’m sorry I was not able to tell you about my promotion. Kame pouted across the window as he showed the paper to Jin.
I got worried when you went missing, idiot. Jin frowned from his place.
Well now you know! :D Kame smiled and winked at him.
It’s now or never Jin! Jin thought and took a deep breath.
Wanna meet up? Jin looked away, his cheeks living up to his last name.
Kame stared at the message before clapping his hands in delight.
I’ve been waiting for you to say that. Meet me downstairs. And that was what Jin was waiting for as he left the office in a speed of light, his heart racing and the corners of his mouth twitching to form a grin.
~*~Amongst the crowd, an ethereal young man made his way to the stunned workaholic man. Jin wanted to speak but he was shushed by Kame’s finger on his lips.
Hi. I’m Kamenashi Kazuya. Kame looked up at Jin, a playful smile on his face.
Hi. I’m Akanishi Jin. Nice to meet you. Jin presented his reply.
“I’ve been waiting for this to happen, Kazuya.” He pulled Kame into an embrace, as they continued to ignore the passersby.
“So have I, Jin.” Kame whispered as he submitted himself to the warmth Jin was giving him.
It was indeed the start of something new as both open themselves to a brighter future with each other.
