I think that's my absolute favorite of your portraits ever.

Your willingness to show us the version you weren't quite happy with, along with the masterpiece you finally managed months later, helps inspire me to keep trying to capture better and better images. Thanks. :-)

Thank you for the kind words. Sometimes something pops into your head and you need to work on it for a long time to get it right, and other times you just know how it should look and it's easy -- and it springs fully formed from the forehead of zeuss.

learn everything, and then forget it.

I had this experience before too, with music. I grew up learning/playing classical violin, then in the past decade I took classes with an Arabic ensemble. Suddenly, there was no use for reading sheet music, no use for all those scales I'd practiced and memorized, no use for where I'd been taught the proper fingering positions were... Sure, a few things like the fact that I knew how to hold a bow and make *sound* helped, but everything else was like jumping off a cliff into a new place based on emotion and intuition. I think that's where you go beyond being "technically proficient" to creating real art of the soul.

Yes, yes, and yes. This is the portrait I hoped you were alluding to when you posted the shot of him in the gallery. Not that I knew it would look like this but, YUM, I want to smoosh my face across the velvet of his coat. His hair colors all balance out. His eyes are wise and mysterious and dark.

You get a gold star!
