The role of Twitter in a blogging world

Jun 05, 2010 10:50

For the past decade I've spent some time and thought and energy into blogging -- and looking back, I think that if you printed the whole thing out and put it between covers it wouldn't be such a bad read. So I'm relatively conscientious about what I post. Last week this blog got about 75,000 visitors and the week before, more than 100,000 and I ( Read more... )

This is still one of those "If you build it, they will come, and then you'll all figure out what exactly it is you built" things to some extent. But I think you've hit the nail on the head. Nobody goes back through old facebook updates, but people will go back through your blog, use them accordingly.

I absolutely agree that they can work in conjunction with one another, and you've nicely described why/how that works.

There *is* less pressure with Twitter and greater freedom to wax not-so-poetic about the tiny moments in our day. Although I have friends not on Twitter who miss the more mundane and frequent LJ posting (working on achieving a balance).

I think you've achieved this balance quite well.

And it IS such good fun to eavesdrop on Shatner and Nimoy!

I often struggle with content and don't really bother much with concerns about length. If I get too wordy, I'll often do an LJ-cut to spare the folks who may not care about (subject) that I've nattered on and on about.

I often forget about my Twitter account but read the twitterings of others and often find newsbits and other useful info there, or get pointed back to their LJ/DW/problog as it were for more info.

I worry about boring people no matter where I post though since I often suffer from "why does anyone care about what I'm blogging about anyway?"

On an different note, what are you using to get such awesome iPhone pics? Using the built in camera never yields such good looking results for me.

I'm relatively new to the blogging thing, but not your LJ. I follow your blog and others because they're interesting. I find they're just long enough - not enough to be a waste and not too short to be inane. To be honest, there are times that I skim for content, if I'm not interested I don't go much further, but I certainly feel no need to drop you based on length or the occasional content I may find unappealing, I simply have the option to move on. I've found that the positives of what you share outweigh the negatives of anything else. Sharing ideas and creativity is part of why I like LJ - I want to be inspired by others. Your posts have served to entertain, spark imagination and inspire me to create more.

Please carry on what your doing until it no longer suits you to do so - I see nothing wrong with how you do it.

How twitter/ facebook fits into your equation is up to you - experiment.

So far I am still resisting Twitter. With the time I have, LJ and Facebook are quite enough to keep up with. I really don't know how you manage it, as you have far more friends and comments than I will ever see.
I do think it's a little sad that activity here has quieted down as much as it has. When I started as a mod in there were posts every day, which would generate numerous comments. That has trickled down to a few posts per month and only a handful of comments.
