So long ago she was a lifeguard
Young and alert, guarding the pool,
her body sleek in a navy tank suit
keeping watch over teens and tots in the summer sun.

So long ago she knew the rules:
the last resort is to enter the waters.
How could she ever forget something so basic,
letting herself drown in his confusion?
