"Jessi."

She turned, her dark hair slinking around her face. Jessi. That was her name, now. In the week since she'd been found on the outskirts of town and brought to this strange place, she'd learned many things. She'd learned to speak, to read, she'd learned about people and how they act and think. Humans were an interesting people, and she was only just beginning to find her place among them.

Kyle stood in the doorway to his - their - room. When she'd been taken in, a flag on her case had gone up at the correctional facility and Nicole Trager and her family had swooped down and picked her up, taking her into her home and life and introducing her to her other stray, the boy she knew as Kyle, the one who'd so easily given her a name.

He'd said she seemed like a Jessi. That he thought the name suited her, beautiful and strong. She let a small smile form at the memory. He could be so earnest sometimes, not like other people, with their double talk and webs of lies and half-truths. It was a lot to take in, and had she not been a...How did Josh put it? Alien super computer...Yes, that was it. Had she not been an alien super computer, she wouldn't have been able to keep up.

"Are you okay?" Kyle asked, concerned. He leaned on one arm against the fram of the door, his eyes intense and his mouth set in a frown.

"Yes," she replied, "Well, no. I think so. I don't know."

She slowly walked away from the desk where she'd been idly playing with the computer and crawled into the tub in the middle of the room.

There was another memory. The night she'd arrived, she had immediately crawled into the oddly placed tub and curled up with Kyle, the concept of modesty and self-consciousness not familiar to her yet. They'd been sleeping like that ever since.

"Zzyzx made me," she said, "For what, I don't know, but the fact is, they made me."

Kyle slowly walked in to the room and she automatically scooted over to make room. As he slid in beside her, she rested her head on his shoulder and sighed when his arm went around her shoulders.

"I think that's what's bugging me. It wasn't Adam that made me. I was made for something else, and I don't like to think about what that something was. It's different for you. You were made for a good purpose. For all I know, I was made for something...not so benevolent.

Kyle was silent for a moment, his heartbeat sounding from his chest the only sound he made.

She settled against him and thought about the past week. This family was wonderful, really. Her earliest memories were fear, disorientation, and...ignorance, really. She didn't know anything at all. It was like she was a newborn, but fully grown at the same time. She still wasn't used to this whole "living" thing, and she was learning new things every day.

And then there was Kyle. He was her hero, her savior. If he hadn't been there for her, she didn't know what she would have done. Nothing good, that's for sure, if her short temper was any indication. When she thought about Kyle, she couldn't help but think that they were like the poles of the eart, complete opposites. He was calm and kind, with a sweet disposition and an endearing modesty. She, on the other hand, was quick to anger and found herself easily frustrated. Lori thought she was "bitchy" and Josh called her "hot", though neither knew that she'd overheard.

"I don't think what you were made for matters."

Had she been a normal person, his voice probably would have startled her. But being what she was, she'd known he was about to speak. The intake of breath, the working of the throat muscles, the unconscious wetting of lips.

"What matters is who you are, not what you were meant to be." He turned his head to look down at her and on impulse pressed his lips against her head, soft and cautious.

She tilted her eyes up to look into his and smiled slightly.

"You think?" She asked, her voice seeming small.

"I think," he responded firmly, a happy grin playing on his face.

Later, she wouldn't be sure how it happened. One moment they were sharing a smile and the next she'd pressed her lips to his and it was soft and delicious and wonderful. And when she pulled away, he looked into her eyes for a mere moment before pulling her to him again.

For the eighth day in a row, she spent her afternoon in study. And this was one subject she was all to happy to pursue.
