Sitting on Top of the World

May 27, 2009 10:50

Having called in early at the Daily Planet, Kyle was already almost done with the rest of his day's work. Not to say that he hadn;t been given enough to keep him occupied, but he worked fast, and while Lois was beautiful, and Tess was certainly a handful, they didn;t serve as prominent enough distractions. He'd taken an early lunch, not think to ask if Clark might have wanted some take-out, but did Kryptonian's even get hungry anyway? And more to the point, Clark had never done the same for Kyle, he was always more concerned with saving the next damsel in distress the world had to offer. As Kyle stpped into the Subway and ordered his sandwhich of choice, he noticed a familiar blonde walking into the establishment. While he and Clark's cousin hadn't had much conversation yet, it felt like the perfect opportunity to change that fact.

"Kara...aren't you...", but before Kyle finished asking Kara if she was suppoed to be in Kent's barn back in Smallville, he remembered two things; how fast she could run, and that she was currently living with Oliver, only a few blocks away, "...never mind. So, you like Subway? Must be...I can't imagine you running errands for Oliver's sandwhich needs, he strikes me as more of a sushi and caviar guy.", he quipped, "So how are things since the...", he refrained from saying the words out loud, in case anyone was listening, "...you know...other place."

Kara had been checking out the grand mall of Metropolis. She still remembered the words from Oliver and Clark, mostly from Clark. No powers, keep your identity a secret. She ended up buying nothing from the grand mall, just browsed through the different clothing racks. She didn't even check how they would look on her. True, she could superspeed them on and off, but she wasn't in the mood. Why had she even agreed to let Oliver keep an eye on her while Clark was doing the working routine at the Daily Planet? Clark was her cousin, but sometimes he was just trying too hard to be the subsitute father figure. It wasn't that she loved Oliver, please, but a change of scenery was needed. From the darkness of the Phantom Zone and the farm chores at the Kent Farm... she slowly cursed as she felt her tummy growl. Ah yes. Kryptonians needed nourishment too. So she walked into the establishment called Subway and smiled to herself as she saw Kyle. She waved and walked over to him, who then chalked up a conversation with her. She heard the beginning of his question and raised her eyebrows as he cut off his sentence.

She laughed, "Kyle, silly, you're so right about Oliver. He's more of
the rich and expensive taste than a Subway sandwich. I..." She inhaled sharply. The other place. Rao, that outfit that she had been wearing to survive. It wasn't the latest fashion, that was for sure! "They're... fine. Much better than at that place, thank you. Yeah, my tummy growled so I figured to come here, I heard from Chloe and Lois this is a nice place. So I decided to give it a try. How are you, Kyle?" Kara asked.

"Expensive taste? Not what I'd call it.", while Kyle liked Oliver enough, he did consider the billionaires tastes to be more pretentious than expensive, sometimes, "I'm fine.", Kyle rubbed the opposing index finger against his Oan ring, a habit he wasn;t aware of but didn;t seem able to drop, "So...you're not like Clark...your memories aren't all about...Smallville.", of course, Kyle wasn't talking about Smallville, but when out in public certain things needed to be spoken of more carefully, and surely Kara knew what he meant.

She smiled. Brainiac was gone, everything was alright again, wasn't it? "Yeah... I have memories of different places. My birthplace, that place, some of Smallville... Detroit..." Kara said, reminiscing about her time in Smallville and the time she had lost her memory. She saw Kyle rub his Oan ring. "Are you okay, Kyle? Do you do that often?"

"Do what?", he noticed what she was talking about although he had by now stopped touching his power ring, it must have been that as it was all he had done recently, of any note. To answer her question, he simply shrugged, and moments later he;d been handed his sandwhich. "I'm not really into taking my lunch break in the usual public places...but feel free to join me, that is...if you can catch up", he flashed a playful smile, "Remember, there's one thing you and I have in common that neither of us shares with Clark.", he winked, before leaving Subway and walking steadily down an alleyway, out of sight of others, and then using the power of his ring to take to the skies and land above the large metal globe above the Daily Planet's rooftop.

She smirked. "If you've got enough for two, I'd love to join you." Kara said with a grin, as she let him go outside. She knew what he was talking about. The exposure in a public place. That and the fact that he could fly. Kara nodded and walked out of the establishment, the shopping mall even, to go to an abandoned alley and then she took to the skies to follow him to the Daily Planet's metal globe. "Perfect place to spend our sandwich." She said with a grin as she landed next to him.

"Our sandwhich?", Kyle asked playfully, with a cocky grin, amused by Kara's cadence to invite herself to part of his food. Perhaps she indeed did need to brush up on her Kryptonian-to-human customs, as he;d heard, but luckily, he was generous enough to prevent this from becoming a problem. Offering her a cunning yet mischeivous look, he broke off half his sandwhich and handed it to her. "So you Kryptonians...are you all this attractive?", he found himself saying something that could be construed as flirtation, unintended. "I mean you and Clark, pretty much look like the perfect people...can't help but wonder if it's in the genes.", he rebuttled himself with a more diverse intent, chomping at his food, unaware of how attractive he in fact was.

"Yeah... sorry." Kara softly whispered. In her haste to chase him, she had forgotten to purchase anything at Subway. One glance at the list had suggested excellent food choices, but she was a novice when it came to Subway food choices. She should have asked Chloe and Lois about the food choices before setting a foot inside the establishment. Then she wasn't prepared for what happened next.

Kara blushed! "Uhm... thank you. F... For the piece of your sandwich." Kara hurriedly said as her fingers enclosed around the sandwich. She didn't take a bite from the sandwich though, and blushed more. What could one say to that? "Yes," she decided on answering, then finally taking a bite. "Mmm, this is good. What flavor is it?" Kara asked... and reached out a hand to lay on his shoulder. "Hey, you're attractive too." Kara said softly.

Kyle rolled his eyes, in partial disbelief, "Sure, I get by, but as far as I know you and Clark don't have gym memberships, and you eat whatever you want...and yet there you are, body-perfect.", then something came to mind, "Then again, Lois and Oliver are in pretty good shape too...so either you're all secretly Kryptonian, or I need some fat friends to feel good about myself.", he laughed taking another bite of his sandwhich, "Does food here even taste the same?", he imagined an alien planet to have different animals, fruits and sauces, and couldn't begin to think of how different they were from the ones on this world.

She laughed. "That's a good one. Oliver and Lois Kryptonians too." Kara said, before she took another bite of her sandwich, chewing a bit before she swallowed. "Yes, it does taste the same." Kara said smiling. "So... have you made any plans for later?"

"You mean besides Green Lantern duty? Not really, not these days. You'd think in a major city packed with so many other superheroes, the workload would die down.", he smirked, slightly proud of himself for how keen he was to step up to the plate as Green Lantern, "Did you ever here of us?", he asked of the Green Lantern Corps, since Kara was a remembering native of Krypton, and the Green Corps span out across the universe.

She nodded. "You're right about that." Kara said, then nodding again. "I've heard a bit about you." Kara told him as she finished her sandwich.

"Oh really?", he asked half-rhetorically with one of his distinctive, dark eyebrows raised, "Like what?"

"We Kryptonians knew about the Green Lantern Corps but I remember little about the details. All I remember is that you were chosen to protect the universe from destruction and that you can fly as well..." Kara said to Kyle, hoping this was not a turn off. She liked him and wanted more with him.

Kyle snickered, Kara sounding somewhat naive when hed always considered she and Clark to be more in control and knowing of things, they were after all descendants of an alien dynasty and yet both were often so coy and bewildered. "Yes Kara, I can fly as well.", he retained his laughter, thinking it cruel to go on to someone so unaccustomed to casual, non-incriminating laughter between people. His half of the sandwhich finished, he figured it was time to get back to work, "Well, it was nice bumping in to you...don't let Oliver domesticate you too much...after all, isn;t it blondes who are supposed to have all the fun?", he offered her a winning gaze with a handsome grin to match, before dropping off the rooftop and using his powers of emerald light to guide himself down to the ground beneath, slowly and gently.

She laughed. "That's what Cyndi Lauper sings about, yes." Kara said as she watched while Kyle summoned emerald light to guide himself down to the ground as she hovered down next to him. "Hey... Kyle?" Kara whispered. She got closer and gave him a kiss on the cheek, she figured lips were bit too personal. "Thank you for the half of the sandwich. I had a great time with you."

A little startled, but comfortable with the friendly kiss on the cheek all the same, Kyle turned to face Kara, who until now he did not know was following him "Anytime." he shrugged indifferently whilst smiling slightly, before landing and making his way back into the Daily Planet building.

"Say hi to Kal... Clark for me, okay?"
