Elementary pilot - differences between DVD screener and TV premiere

Here's a list of differences between the DVD screener and the TV premiere (the iTunes version) of Elementary 1.01 pilot. I opened up one version in one window and the other version in another window and watched them side-by-side. This made it pretty easy to notice different cuts, but more difficult to notice differences in music or when a line was in one version but not the other (since the audio for both was playing at the same time).

I did my best, but let me know if I missed anything!

Tighter cuts: In the opening scene where Amy is killed is longer, the scene is longer in the screener. Each of the slow-motion segments of her murder lasts longer - more time on the glasses breaking, more time on the killer strangling her as her hair flips back, more time on her falling in the shattered glass. Her murder lasts 55 seconds in the screener, but only 40 seconds in the TV premiere version.

List of tighter cuts: This sort of tighter cutting, where segments are shorter in the TV premiere, happens throughout. Some segments are just half a second shorter in the TV premiere, so scenes are shorter even though there really isn't any noticeable material being removed. It's more noticeable in the opening because it's 15 seconds being removed from a scene that's less than a minute long, but less noticeable in others. Other examples of this tighter editing:
  • When Holmes and Watson meet, beginning at about "Do you believe in love at first sight?" There's a half second longer spent on Sherlock's look when he says it, and on Joan's reaction.
  • On the "tube," there's a half-second longer before Holmes begins talking.
  • When Watson is setting up the alarm clocks in her bedroom.
  • In the bee scene, there's a half-second longer on Holmes before he says, "I know my father secured your services for..."
  • When Watson walks out to the car after questioning the victim, the first second or so of her walk is cut.
  • When Dr. Mantlo has the press release, "I would like to thank the police," in the screener this is all part of its own scene, but in the TV premiere, his voice begins in the scene before it and cuts into the scene, so it's tighter.
  • When Holmes is looking over the Facebook photographs on the wall.
  • When Abreu picks up the pill bottle in evidence, the camera stays on the pills a moment longer before he says, "Now what?" as well as other cuts of that segment.
  • Different take: When Watson walks into the living room to look over the case files after Holmes has been arrested, it begins with a different take, and is also shorter.
  • When Holmes walks out of the court building, a few seconds of his walk are cut. Also just before that, a second more of Watson looking over the files are cut.
  • When Dr. Mantlo is being questioned, just before he says, "No, I never Peter Saldua..." there's an extra second.
  • Different take: There's a slightly different cut when Holmes opens the phone to play the therapy sessions.

Cut line: Holmes' line, "Full disclosure," right before saying, "I actually find sex repellent," is removed from the TV premiere.

Extra: The TV premiere from itunes has neat little title cards where few of the commercials were.

Music differences: The music is different in a few places. It was difficult for me to find where the differences were because I was listening to both versions simultaneously, so these are just what I found. Additionally, I don't usually analyze music, so I apologize in advanced for the misuse of terms or for causing confusion.
  • In the screener, there's a musical build after the husband tells Holmes that a ring box is missing and Holmes inquires about the struggle in the master bedroom. In the TV premiere, this build is withheld for a few extra seconds, and it might even be different music.
  • When Holmes is in the bedroom, there's pronounced music throughout the screener, but it's very quiet or almost absent in the TV premiere.
    • And when Holmes reveals the safe room, the quiet music in the TV premiere builds to the reveal of Amy. The music is noticeably different here, not just in volume, but it sounds like completely different music.
  • Completely different music when Watson wakes up late and checks the time/text on her phone. The music carries over to the police station.
  • In the scene where Watson decides to leave, in the screener there's a noise build of sound as she walks out, but that isn't there in the TV premiere. I think it might even be different music.
  • More dynamic music leading up to Holmes crashing the car in the TV premiere. Once the car crashes, the music fades out around when Holmes takes a breath and says, "Better." In the screener, the music isn't as dynamic leading up to the crash and stays pronounced through the end of the scene.
  • Different music as Watson walks into the living room after Holmes' arrest, but it becomes the same music again when she notices the rice allergy.
  • When questioning Dr. Mantlo in Gregson's office, the music is quieter in the TV premiere. As the phone plays the recording, it's almost silent.
  • At the very end, in the screener when Holmes turns off the light the music continues briefly and fades. In the TV premiere, the music cuts as the light goes out.

Cut line: Viewing the interrogation room at the police station, there's a line in the screener where Holmes suggests Watson go home. (The line's something like, "You don't involve in this, Watson. Perhaps you should go home.") Watson ignores this and asks, "How do you do it?" The TV premiere starts with Watson's line, cutting Holmes' line.

Cut scene: There's a scene in the screener that's completely cut from the TV premiere: When Holmes and Watson leave the police station. In this scene, Holmes lists the tall men suspects to Watson, he tells Watson it took him seven tries to guess Gregson's password, and the wonderful line "but the police still think Mantlo's their guy" "well the police think lots of things, it's adorable." They also talk about Watson agreeing with Holmes about the bruise patterns on the body and the hand size, and Holmes saying that he can get Watson access to the body to verify if she'd like. (This was such a WONDERFUL SCENE for their burdening friendship, how could it be cut?! Limited time, probably.)

Cut lines: When Watson and Holmes meet outside the car after Watson got the name of the attacker from the victim, some of Watson's lines are cut from the TV premiere. In the screener, Watson says, "You're so full of it. " Then Holmes makes his duckface and calls Gregson. The TV premiere goes straight from "You are so full of it" to Holmes making his duckface and making the call.

Cut line: When they're back home looking over the Facebook photos, Holmes has this line in the screener: "No. It's too simple, it's too fast. Something's off, I can feel it." The TV premiere cut the "It's too simple, it's too fast" portion.

Cut line and rearranged scene: There's a few changes/rearranges and a cut line when Dr. Mantlo drives to the hospital and Holmes confronts him.
  • The actual scene of Dr. Mantlo driving and parking his car in the screener is cut from the TV premiere, which instead starts with Dr. Mantlo getting out of his car.
  • The cuts are in a different order:
    • Screener: Dr. Mantlo parks, Holmes get out of the car, Dr. Mantlo gets out of the car, Dr. Mantlo walks from his car putting his jacket on, Holmes runs up to him.
    • TV premiere: Dr. Mantlo gets out of the car, Holmes gets out of the car, Holmes runs up to him.
  • In the screener, Holmes says "There he is" as he gets out of the car. The scene of him getting out of the car is in the TV premiere, but the line is cut.

Prison scene: There are several differences.
  • Cut segment/line: In the screener, when Watson visits Holmes in prison, a security guard leads Watson in and says, "Over there," Watson responds, "Thank you," and then Holmes looks up. The TV premiere begins with Holmes looking up.
  • More cut lines: In the TV premiere, the conversation begins with Holmes apologizing. It cuts out everything before that in the screener:
"Miss Watson, have I told you how much I enjoy your perfume? It almost makes me forget how much urine stains the floor." and Watson's "stop fucking with me" face.
  • Different cut/take: The cut of Holmes apologizing is from a different angle and a different take. JLM's voice in the screener version sounds a little softer and more vulnerable to me, and it's shown with a closer shot, so it comes off as more sincere imho. The TV take is a bit faster and from further away.
Cut segment: When Gregson has Dr. Mantlo in his office and Gregson calls in his detectives/consultants, and Dr. Mantlo looks like "WTF is this?" there's a half-second cut in the screener in which Gregson holds up a finger as though to indicate it'll just take a moment. This half-second is cut from the scene. (This might go under the "tighter cuts" listed above, but I think it's an amusing-enough moment to list separately.)

Cut line: When confronting Dr. Mantlo in Gregson's office, this line of Mantlo's was cut: "All right, Mr. Holmes, amaze me." It picks up on the following line: "What does a bag of rice and an overturned washer have to do with anything?"

So there it is, the differences between the pilot versions! Hope someone else finds it amusing.

Also! You can download the pilot FOR FREE (legally!) from iTunes. Not sure how long this will last. It's 45 minutes 44 seconds long, and 1.47 GB.
