Jojo's Part 2

Dec 15, 2006 02:08

Damn, I was doing pretty well about starting to post regularly and then I went and got behind again. I need to catch up on reading posts, and also I'll be catching up on Jojo's babble and my summaries for anime_reboot. Watch this space as I say stupid things and try to get American anime fans to care about Black Jack!

Anyway, the semester is over and I survived it! Also I've torn myself away from video games, television and podcasting for a little while. And making cookies and such, since it's the holidays.

I got my verification number from JET today, but of course I can't actually check my status with it until January or February. I think that's what will kill me the most-not just probably getting rejected but the fact that I have to wait so long to find out. Argh.

Doing another AWO segment, so since I should probably actually use this thing (if anybody's actually reading it), here's a few random thoughts. This covers from the beginning of Part 2 through chapter 82, which is after Joseph fights AC/DC on the training island.

Ah, Jojo's Part 2 is starting to feel much more like the Jojo's I'm used to. Even bigger dorks, increasingly convoluted battle strategies, weirder fashion, a huge increase in the amount of naked man flesh on panel, and more gay. Still no Stands, so the fights aren't as cool, but I think Joseph's odd "use Hamon to fling/explode things at people" style of fighting along with him being totally ridiculous has kicked the fight scenes up a notch.

Oh Joseph. You are SO DUMB AND SILLY and I love you for it. When I first saw Joseph in the Part 3 OAV series, I don't know that they really conveyed his dorkiness. Then when I read the manga version, I thought that perhaps he was just going senile. But no, no, he's just a moron. He's a hot moron who's burning with SEIGI though, so it all works out I guess. He's so damn rude too, but somehow it's more hilarious than annoying or offensive. Maybe it's because he's so exaggerated and lame about it, like him gagging over Caesar's pickup lines and throwing pasta at him in the restaurant.

Speaking of Caesar, he is pretty, isn't he? It's really too bad that since this is Jojo's and he's a Zeppeli, he's oh so doomed. Wah. So I guess that I'll just enjoy he and Jojo being complete dorks together and have them get it on in my head until Araki finally tries to break my heart again. Because yes, Joseph + Caesar = LOVE. Also, his seduction techniques *are* lame, but Joseph you have absolutely no room to comment about anyone's approach when it comes to women. XD

I'm...not quite sure what I think about Cars, Wham, AC/DC and Santana (The Man Train) yet. I appreciate them adding to the naked man flesh quotient, but we just don't really know that much about them. They're still sort of larger than life mysterious figures. I do appreciate their totally over the top strange attacks and such though. The antidote is in my piercing indeed. (Lip piercing, which then of course makes me think that Joseph is going to have to make out with Wham in order to get to it, oh Araki. Except then there was the nose piercing and my mental image got gross.)

I really like Lisa Lisa so far. Not sure yet whether she'll get a huge part to play in what goes on, since she's the sensei character and that either means a lot of involvement or almost none. I do hope we get to see more of her and find out more about her. Also, please Araki don't kill her off. Hahahaha.

But *that's* Suzi Q? Joseph, that's who you married? I...why? Not that she seems terrible or anything, but she's just sort of there. Oh wait, this is Jojo's where the romantic relationships are all completely insane and/or nonsensical.

There's such a leap from Part 1 to this in terms of female characters; Erina's all right, but she kind of only had one facial expression and was very much on the side. I'm not sure whether the blandness of Erina in Part 1 had more to do with the fact that it was Victorian England and not really very focused on the areas that women would have mostly been involved in, or Araki just improving as a writer.

You know, I find it pretty interesting that Jojo's, a series that in all honesty tends to focus far more on the fighting than complex character interaction and development, somehow seems to have better female characters than a large chunk of shonen manga. Sure, part of it is that he has women that can kick your ass, but it's not *just* that. Maybe Araki doesn't spend a ton of time on relationships or detailed internal conflict, but still something feels a little more solid about his female characters. They don't feel like some strange, illogical alien species or brainless sex toys, they feel just like all the other people he writes.
