SMT MMORPG initial thoughts

Apologies for the complete lack of updates. Been mostly disconnected from fandom outside of podcast and magazine stuff, though I'm taking some time to read fanfic again finally. Mostly I've just been keeping my head down and trying to muddle through the days. Getting a bit restless lately though...maybe I should work on some fic or artwork.

Oh, I've also been getting back into the swing of games again. Including the Shin Megami Tensei MMORPG beta. Only started recently though, as you can probably tell from my low level character.

So far it's interesting, but it could definitely use some polish. I much prefer WoW's control scheme to the one here - made it much easier to navigate entirely with the mouse while using the other hand to trigger skills. You can do that here, but it doesn't have the ability to simultaneously turn and move by clicking the mouse wheel like WoW does, which always made controlling things much easier. It also doesn't auto-attack once you've targeted, meaning you have to trigger even the basic attack every time (not by default anyway, if there's a way to set it let me know).

Character creation is a bit limited, sadly. There are a decent number of color options for hair and I guess hair styles, but the options for body size/shape are tiny. The only body options are basically for short/medium/tall height and then a few different options for the shape of your face. No control over girth or other build factors.

It's not really *bad* though and if you like SMT you'll probably want to check this out. It has the same ability from the console RPGs to contract with and summon various demons to assist you in battle. In addition to offering to join, some demons will drop treasures for you when you sweet talk them. There seem to be a number of quests that involve locating and contracting with a specific kind of demon in order to bring it to someone or to log it in this Pokedex-esque compendium.

One other thing that stands out is the fact that there aren't really classes. At least, you don't select a class to begin with. Everything is entirely determined by the skills you choose to learn and level. So you can make a tank or a mage by choosing to level the relevant skills and attributes, but every single thing is open to you at all times rather than specific skill trees being available based on a pre-selected class.
