Freshman, Cultural Anthropology, Environmental Science major
Personal history: Kyla had a very traditional Native American upbringing, growing up almost exclusively amongst other Navajo people. Her father was the medicine man for her tribe, and also a werewolf. To the Navajo, werewolves, more commonly known as skinwalkers, are seen as protectors and guardians of their tribes. Though the condition was acquired in the typical way, through a bite, their more animalistic nature is often kept in check though a series of rigorous rituals and meditations. As an only child, Kyla is poised to take her father’s place when the time comes. When she turned 18, Kyla went through a ceremony in which she was bitten in preparation to one day take her place. It is said that at the height of their training, a skinwalker is granted the ability to change back and forth at will, no longer completely bound by the cycle of the moon. However, it will undoubtedly take years for Kyla to reach this point in her training, and she has still only ever witnessed her father change during the full moon. Her prized possession is a dream catcher her mother made for her just before she left for Sunnydale, with hairs from both her and her father’s wolven forms woven into the design.
When Kyla and her father visited UC Sunnydale while picking out colleges, they both sensed something about the town. A concentration of power of some kind, almost undoubtedly supernatural, and thought it would be a good place for Kyla to spend her college years, not only to continue her education but to help her learn and prepare for the time when she has to take her father’s place. As of now, it is planned for Kyla to return home during every full moon cycle, but depending on events, that may change.
Physical description: Kyla has an average, slightly athletic build. She has enjoyed hiking and biking from a young age, which helped keep her in fairly good shape. When she lived at home, Kyla was usually always off hiking or biking, exploring the nearby wilderness. She has long black hair that falls halfway down her back, which she usually wears pulled back in a simple ponytail at the nape of her neck. Her hair ties and what little jewelry she wears is definitely of Native American design, her favorite piece being a silver bracelet that's etched with a lynx surrounded by tribal designs.
Personality: Even though Kyla embraces what she is, that has far from made her life any easier. One thing attending college is making her realize is just how apart from other people she is, more so than when she was amongst the Navajo, and even more so now that she is away from home. She is generally easy to get along with and takes many things in stride. Kyla is one of those people who enjoys a good puzzle or mystery, and takes pleasure in figuring them out. She sees them as challenges rather than obstacles. She has a slightly overly curious nature, stemming from her desire to know things. This resulted in landing her in trouble and with various bumps and bruises throughout her childhood.
Likes/dislikes: Kyla has a strong love for animals of all kinds and nature in general. She feels most at home outdoors, and spends as much time there as possible. Even though she studied science, she always preferred fieldwork to lab work, so she would often do the 'grunt' work outdoors, only joining her classmates or lab partners inside when necessary. She dislikes people who are wasteful. She also has a very short patience for people she deems to be rude or simply mean, or having an overabundance of other undesirable character flaws. When dealing with such people she can be very assertive, if only to tell them off.
And I was wondering, Lori, would it be ok if I made her Katrina's roomate. Not sure if any of the other female characters are un rommated right now. (and please ignore my making up of words, heh)
