This is taken from the travel diary I kept whilst in Japan. I was with my mother, who is the most fantastic and amazing person ever. I love my mum.
I can only understand a teeny bit of Japanese, so the MC parts are general and basically glossed over. If you went to this con, please tell me what the heck they were talking about. [some parts were taken from numerous reports I found on the internet]
No reposting anywhere. You can link to this page, however.
[The first part is basically me and mum going to the con etc. The second part is the actual con. Feel free to skip our idiocy. Also, I can't remember the order of things, so everything is everywhere.]
“First things first - we didn’t get kicked out.
‘We made our way over to the City Centre after our little nap. The time was about 4:00PM. We walked down the main road, which took us directly there. There was no advertising - the only reason we found it was that they were selling merchandise out the front and there were a few girls (10? 20?) sitting on the stairs out the front.
‘I got myself a Massu uchiwa, the booklet, a T-shirt (which fits! Huzzah!) and me and mum both got penlights:
‘We sat on the stairs for a while, because we still had around 45 mins until it started. People slowly trickled in from the streets. All of a sudden, people started pouring out of the Centre, having obviously just come from another TegoMasu concert - so the poor guys had a concert before ours.
‘There were heaps of people dressed up - anything to get them noticed. Two girls cosplayed as Tegoshi and Massu (from their Tanabata Matsuri PV), with the same hairstyles and everything. They were cool, and came to our concert as well as the one beforehand. There were quite a few girls in kimonos. There were also many in soccer shirts - for the Fifa World Cup. Also because Tegoshi is a massive soccer fan. There was one person in a Pikachu cosplay. There were heaps of people in pink and yellow - the colours of the tour. Groups of two split up the colours, and many wore the same clothes as their friend, but in the opposite colour. There were two other foreigners that we noticed, but we only saw them once we were seated.
‘Then we started lining up, and the officials came around telling us something (it was to tell us to just move the line across so we wouldn’t go across the street - but me and mum started moving away). So we lost our spot, but the official came up to us again and fit us back in.
‘There were also these scalpers who were really incredibly creepy. There would have been around 5 of them when we started, but we think their numbers grew. Thank God we didn’t have to go to them for tickets - they were scary.
‘Anyway, after the line thing, we got our bags checked, and went inside. We had no idea where to sit, so mum (being the awesome piece of awesomesauce that she is) went and asked a girl who had just sat down. She got up and showed us where we were - she was so nice, and very happy. We were near the back, but could see easily. The venue wasn’t that big.
‘The stage wasn’t all that big, but it wasn’t as though we were expecting it to be. There was a space for the band, and two microphone stands standing in the middle - one had a pink spotlight on it, and the other was yellow. On the screen at the back, they started playing CMs of other Johnny’s - KAT-TUN’s Going! was one of them. They also scrolled through concert dates.
‘Two girls behind us stood up and started chanting ‘TegoMasu! TegoMasu!’ and we’d all clap.
‘Then the lights went down. and we all stood up. Because we were expecting TegoMasu to be behind the microphones, imagine our shock when they popped up either side of the stage. I couldn’t believe it - they were right there. It was so amazing. I can’t remember the song they were singing - it was one of their new songs - Neiro. It was cool because mum and I were waving our penlights around like everyone else. We just kept following what they were doing.
‘TegoMasu were complaining about the heat, and so asked us all to use our uchiwas to fan them. I felt like an idiot waving around my Massu uchiwa when I was so far back, but I did it anyway.
‘There was this adorable part where Tegoshi wrapped his arms around Massu and they started walking together. Then Massu put his arm through Tegoshi’s, and they walked. Then Tegoshi did the same. Then Massu put his arm around Tegoshi’s waist and suddenly lifted him up. Poor Tegoshi had to keep on singing. There was another part where Massu was chasing after Tegoshi and kept falling down (on purpose).
‘They did the most amazing version of Ai Ai Gasa - an acoustic version, I suppose. Their voices sounded so incredible together. They just sat on stools and sung the entire song, it was really beautiful, and gave me goosebumps.
‘Some of the songs were slightly remixed - I suppose it was so the band could play it. Kataomoi Chiisana Koi was done really well - I can’t remember much of what happened though.
‘Tegoshi sung his solo first - Kesenai, with Massu on piano. It was really cute - after the first few songs, they stood in the middle, drinking and wiping their sweat, and Massu put on his little conductor hat, with Tegoshi kind of staring at him. He took it off reluctantly. He then went over to Tegoshi’s microphone stand (the pink one), and put his own mic there, with Tegoshi going “It’s pink. That’s not yours. Pink!” Massu then went over to his keyboard and started tinkering around, playing odd notes [I found out later that it was the music to a game], over the top of Tegoshi talking. So cute. Anyway, then he started playing properly, and the keyboard with Tegoshi’s singing voice was amazing.
‘Then Massu came and sung Minna ga Iru Sekai wo Hitotsu ni Ai wo Motto Give and Take Shimashou (I swear that’s the longest song title ever), with Tegoshi being awesome on the electric guitar. Massu forgot the words at one point, and just stood there blankly (Tegoshi was laughing, and brought it up during the MC).
‘Near the end, they walked backstage, leaving the band playing. Then the opening chords of Boku no Cinderella started up, and two carousel-type elephants rolled onstage, with Tegoshi on the pink-decorated one, and Massu on the yellow one. Massu said something about him naming his elephant “Ai” because it was their “TegoMasu no Ai” tour. I didn’t catch Tegoshi’s name. They started throwing their signed balls during this song, but Massu kept one for afterwards. He was determined to get it up into the back section, so he threw it really hard - but it didn’t reach. He looked so dejected, and started telling the ball off. Then he went backstage to go sign another ball (and wash his face), while Tegoshi stood there by himself
‘He started talking about the soccer, and the fact that some fans had soccer shirts on. He did this adorable pretend soccer-kick, which sent his hair flying (he did it again later, and managed to hurt his neck). Then he told us all to say something (along the lines of “Everyone welcome onstage Tegoshi Yuya”), and went backstage. He peeked onstage, told us to say it, and walked out regally, ending up in the middle of the stage. He did his “Tegoshi desu” with this incredibly serious face, and then started singing the Japanese anthem without his mic, with his hand over his heart. Then he finished and was going “Nippon!” (clap clap clap) “Nippon!” but during the clapping part whacked himself on the chest with the microphone.
‘Massu came back, then, with this strange look on his face (a what-the-hell look). He wanted to know why it was only Tegoshi singing the anthem and not both of them. Then he told Tegoshi that one player from the team playing against Japan (in the soccer) had injured himself. Tegoshi was so happy, he was yelling about how awesome it was, and then apologising to the audience. Then he started yelling about how awesome it was again.
‘Massu then threw his ball, and it managed to get up into the back area. He did his Massuperman pose (he was doing it all night).
‘When the elephants were rolled backstage, TegoMasu went all quiet, and suddenly Massu goes, “…Moonwalk,” and then he did it, humming away.
‘The MC was hilarious. Tegoshi was talking about being a junior, and dancing at a KAT-TUN concert. He said that there was one part where KAT-TUN would be backstage, and the juniors were meant to dance around. Then they were meant to go back, when KAT-TUN came onstage. But Tegoshi got caught up in the moment, standing in between Kame and Jin, and for a minute, KAT-TUN had seven members. Then he realised, and ran offstage happily, flapping his arms. He then impersonated Kame - looking right into the camera and doing that hand movement he does. He looked exactly like him. Massu then did his Nakamaru impersonation - he used his hand and sort of folded it over his own nose, to pretend that it was Maru’s. Then he put his mic up like Nakamaru does to beatbox. I almost fell off my seat laughing.
‘Massu then got Tegoshi to impersonate each member of NEWS saying “Chu! Chu! Chu!”. Ryo’s one was the best - all low and husky. Massu made fun of Shige’s one, saying that he sounded like a frog. Massu was talking about how he almost fell offstage when he was a junior, and it was the first time girls ‘kyaa”d for him. He’s pretty sure that he made the same noise, however. He was also speaking about how he tried to sleep on the bus to Nagano, but the front seat was uncomfortable, so he moved to the back one to lie down. He fell asleep, but fell off the seat and hit his head.
‘I was hanging out for them to sing Hanamuke. And my God, it was amazing. I love it so so so so much, I was almost crying.
‘They also sung HIGHWAY, which was awesome. We were all hyper by then, and I was screaming out “HIGHWAY!!!” like a madwoman.
‘They taught us a little dance thing which went along with Chu! Chu! Chu! We didn’t do it, but everyone else did. All I can remember of it is that there was arm-flapping. Massu was hilarious - he was doing it in slow motion, as well as singing the song in this distorted deep voice. After a while, Tegoshi goes “Faster!” and Massu sped up, now taking on a high-pitched voice and singing it fast.
Massu also did this awesome backflip and one-handed handstand at the beginning. I can’t remember when.
‘Whilst singing Cheetah, Gorilla, Orangutan, they got the audience to sing the ‘la la la’ parts. Well, that’s what me and mum sang. It was really awesome, and sounded so cool. It went on forever, though, and I was feeling slightly light-headed afterwards.
‘When they went offstage for the last time, everyone just sat there, and then those two girls from before started up with their “TegoMasu!” chant and I joined in…slightly. They came out again, for an encore, and sung Kiss ~Kaerimichi no Love Song~, and we all sung with them. I was there blurting out my mangled Japanese, and mum was there screaming out those “I LOVE YOU’”‘s and “STAND BY ME”‘s. So funny.
‘At the end, they played the instrumental version (they had gone again), and everyone started singing - it was really beautiful. Then that finished, and the “TegoMasu!” chanting started up again.
Tegoshi came out first, walking as if he were marching. He came onstage, and walked across it…and left. All with a straight face. Then Massu came on, doing the same, but falling over on purpose and looking all sheepish as he rushed across to the other side. The end.”
